    Gordon Weeks|May 19, 2022

About 100 residents turned out Saturday to watch 25 firefighters from Central Mason Fire & EMS and Fire Districts 6 and 17 battle flames inside an old house next to the Shelton Civic Center, and then let it burn to the ground. The live fire training exercise started at 9 a.m., with fires lit inside the dilapidated house at 218 S. 5th St., and then extinguished. By 1 p.m., the house was engulfed in flames as firefighters watched the structure collapse. The house was owned by the City of Shelton,...

  • Damon Point, home of the streaked homed lady

    Kirk Ericson|May 19, 2022

I spent the summer of my 19th year working outside the northern Washington town of Republic on a cattle and alfalfa ranch along the Sanpoil River, a river that drains into the Columbia. It was there that the ranch owner, Stephen Konz, told me one sunny day to build a ladder, with rungs 12 inches apart. When I finished the ladder, a couple of the rungs were 12 inches apart, but other rungs were more and less than 12 inches apart. Rung uniformity matters in ladders, as it turns out. Mr. Konz was...

  • Nature bats last

    Alex Fethiere|May 19, 2022

Readers of this column from February of last year may recall my trials of beer traps combined with Sluggo to thin slug populations. Favorite tipples were chosen, innumerable slugs died, and their population hasn't fully recovered in 2022. Three species of garter snakes (Thamnophis spp.) and the narrow-collared snail-eating beetle (Scaphinotus angusticollis) have proliferated as well. I have created habitats for them after reading about their needs. I have seen these predators eating slugs, and...

I'm trying something different for this week's reviews. Please let me know if it works for you. I often review the start of new shows (or the start of new seasons of returning shows), but unless the entire season dumps at once, rarely do I review the conclusions of those season-long arcs. This matters because most modern television and streaming shows are written as season-long arcs, which was absolutely not the case with TV shows when I was growing up in the 1980s. Eighties TV had notable...

Although she started her next journey from Oahu, she was a dyed-in-the-wool Shelton girl. Nadia loved movies. Her favorite was Out of Africa. The beautiful words "...I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills" could easily read, I raised a family in Shelton, at the foot of the Olympic Mountains...and end with"...I...
