  • 'Still' uses Fox's career to capture travails, triumphs

    Compiled by reporter Kirk Boxleitner|May 18, 2023

It's hard to convey to those who didn't experience the 1980s firsthand what a huge deal Michael J. Fox was, and how much he seemed to remain a down-to-earth guy. I'd say (as a compliment to both men) that he was the Will Smith of his day, except Smith and Fox's heydays weren't that far removed - "Family Ties" ran from 1982-89, while "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" ran from 1990-96. And of course, Smith was never diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. The title of the Michael J. Fox biopic on Apple TV...

  • 'Guardians of the Galaxy' has satisfying closure

    Compiled by reporter Kirk Boxleitner|May 11, 2023

In retrospect, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" feels like the true capstone to the Marvel Cinematic Universe up through "Infinity War," because it finally addresses the last loose plot threads left untied after Thanos (and Bruce Banner and Tony Stark) snapped their fingers while wearing the Infinity Gauntlet. Thanos' brief mid-credits appearance at the end of the first "Avengers" film in 2012 obscures the fact that his first full, substantive role was in the first "Guardians of the Galaxy"...

  • 'Poker Face' is worthy spiritual successor to 'Columbo'

    Compiled by reporter Kirk Boxleitner|Feb 2, 2023

Ever since COVID reacquainted me in 2020 with Peter Falk's "Columbo," I've considered how neat it would be to see the murder-mystery genre diversified by creating a female version of the Columbo character. Until recently, one niche of character portrayals where women have been underrepresented, especially outside of relationship-oriented dramedies, is the "clever mess" category. You'd recognize this character as a man, because he's Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House and Peter Falk as LAPD Lt....

  • Durrie returns to Belfair Self-Storage 'art wall'

    Compiled by reporter Kirk Boxleitner|Dec 15, 2022

One month after the works of her wife and "muse" made a second appearance at Belfair Self-Storage, multimedia artist Alice Durrie has followed suit, with her artwork returning to manager Barbara Treick's art wall in December. Durrie's pursuit of Asian art techniques has continued - her fascination with bonsai miniature tree cultivation has evolved into a new form of self-expression. "I live alongside the Tahuya River, which provides an ever-changing beach canvas of sand, gravel and rock,"...

  • Port of Allyn raises electricity rates to keep pace with PUD

    Compiled by reporter Kirk Boxleitner|Nov 3, 2022

The Port of Allyn Commission had a public hearing during its special meeting Oct. 24 about its proposed plans to not significantly revise its district boundaries this year. “I’m good with not moving things around, because water is going to find its own level,” Port Commissioner John Sheridan said. “It’s not significant enough.” Area resident Ken Van Buskirk noted the Port of Shelton has at-large commissioners, adding that Mason County officials had told him the Port of Allyn could create at-large districts of its own. A petition of 10% of its...

  • Four movies, ranging from horror to fantasy

    Compiled by reporter Kirk Boxleitner|Oct 20, 2022

Two Halloween-appropriate horror films, and two first-season finales of streaming shows: Halloween Ends Watching "Halloween Ends" made me feel like the 2005 viral meme of Tyra Banks (herself a victim of Michael Myers, in 2002's "Halloween: Resurrection") when she screamed, "I was rooting for you! We were all rooting for you!" I will still defend 2018's "Halloween" as the best film in the franchise since the 1978 original, and its direct sequel, 2021's "Halloween Kills," started out with all the...

  • Port of Grapeview facing 10-year redistricting

    Compiled by reporter Kirk Boxleitner|Sep 8, 2022

The Port of Grapeview is set to convene a special meeting Sept. 13 to address its redistricting, which is required every 10 years for federal, state and many local government agencies. The purpose of redistricting the port is to balance the populations in each of its three districts to ensure equitable representation. Port Commissioner Mike Blaisdell, who’s leading the current redistricting effort, pointed out that since the 2010 census, the port district’s population has increased by 302 residents. Blaisdell cited “tremendous support” from Ma...

  • Haven hosts seminar on the demands of aging

    Compiled by reporter Kirk Boxleitner|Aug 18, 2022

The Haven in Allyn, an assisted living and home-care agency, invites the community to attend Aging Smarter, a presentation from 10 a.m. to noon on Aug. 25 that’s designed to help people “prepare for life’s unexpected turns” as they age, according to Debra Jamerson, director of resident care. Jamerson, who’s been the resident care director at the Haven since 2007, said she’s seen an increase in people “who are in crisis” and don’t know where to start when it comes to arranging proper care for their elderly loved ones. “Aging comes with a unique...

    Compiled by reporter Kirk Boxleitner|Aug 11, 2022

Section of SR 302 closure begins today A nine-day closure of a section of state Route 302 at Little Minter Creek is set to begin at 9 p.m. today. Construction crews working for the state Department of Transportation will install two culverts to improve fish migration under the highway. • 'Moon Knight' and 'Picard' wrap up well

    Compiled by reporter Kirk Boxleitner|May 19, 2022

I'm trying something different for this week's reviews. Please let me know if it works for you. I often review the start of new shows (or the start of new seasons of returning shows), but unless the entire season dumps at once, rarely do I review the conclusions of those season-long arcs. This matters because most modern television and streaming shows are written as season-long arcs, which was absolutely not the case with TV shows when I was growing up in the 1980s. Eighties TV had notable...

  • 'Servant of the People' is an inspiring winner

    Compiled by reporter Kirk Boxleitner|Mar 24, 2022

Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger were able to lean on their movie careers to get elected governor of California, which led Reagan to higher office and Schwarzenegger back to Hollywood. Donald Trump's high profile from his reality TV show was credited with helping him win the presidency, although his social media presence played at least as large a part in that. But none of those three entertainers went directly from playing the president of their country on TV to getting elected...

  • 'Boba Fett' charts former lone wolf's social evolution

    Compiled by reporter Kirk Boxleitner|Jan 13, 2022

Is it possible to evolve (or retain) a social conscience while remaining an unrepentant criminal? Gangster fables have contemplated that question for generations, with "The Godfather," "Pulp Fiction," "The Sopranos" and "Breaking Bad" serving as some of the more notable examples. And while the answer has been "no" in all the aforementioned examples, none of those tales have been set in a world as lawless as Tatooine, where there aren't even any cops to bribe. It's no exaggeration to describe...
