  • Mary, new puppy have grown fond of each other

    Clydene Hostetler|Mar 9, 2023

Sam is still in California and Mary keeps herself busy. The weather is getting nicer and she works out in their yard picking up, raking and burning branches from winter storms. When she leaves her new pup is extremely happy upon her return. Mary speaks of her new pup several times this week. One day she was gone most of the day and into the evening and when she arrived home there was no pup. After exploring, she discovered him on the neighbor's porch. Poor little guy got lonely. Saturday, Feb....

  • Sam in San Francisco; Mary maintains her pace

    Mar 2, 2023

Snow, rain, snow rain ... Kind of like today's weather. I think Mary likes coming home to her new puppy. It's always happy to see her. Sam is off on another adventure to San Francisco. Mary stays busy and sometimes I ask myself, "Where does she get her energy?" Saturday, Feb. 19, 1949 Today we awoke to see snow on the ground. It has been snowing ever since! Can't see how it will all end. It's now noon. Sam washed clothes and covered my camellias again from the snow, fed the pheasants and then...

  • Mary's week filled with stops around the Sound

    Clydene Hostetler|Feb 23, 2023

I think Mary's favorite adjective is lovely. What do you think? I wish Mary would have taken a picture of their new puppy. Busy week for Mary and Sam and the weather is still trying to be winter. Thursday, Feb. 10, 1949 Sam came home on the last ferry so came in late. Arose late and cleaned house. Then we went to Post Office. Had to try the hill twice before we got up. So icy! At 1:15 I drove to the beauty shop. Sam had to go up twice to make the hill again. After my hair was done, I drove to Eu...

  • Snowy roads make driving tough for Mary and Sam

    Clydene Hostetler|Feb 16, 2023

Mary is home from their trip and taking care of business and catching up on her socializing. The weather seems to be very similar to what we are having. Cold! I don’t go out unless I absolutely must. I like warmth. Friday, Feb. 4, 1949 Today I awoke early so got up. We left for Seattle at 8:45 a.m. and made it alright without chains. To Conductresses meeting and it was nice. Learned a lot, too. The decorations were hearts trimmed with lace. 23 were there. Bought material for Valentine addenda f...

  • Mary and Sam leave Southern California behind

    Clydene Hostetler|Feb 9, 2023

Mary and Sam finally get home from their long trip. Five inches of snow is on the ground. Can’t stop Mary from going to Chapter. While they were gone their dog had been hit up on the road and was killed. I bet it seems different and lonely for them. Friday, Jan. 28, 1949 We woke up before the alarm went off so soon were on our way. Ate at Tip’s on Wilshire at 8 a.m. and were at Rosemead to get Vina and Henry about 9. We left at 9:15. Stopped at Santa Monica for mail (there was none) then ano...

  • Thelers shop, dine, sightsee in Southern California

    Clydene Hostetler|Feb 2, 2023

Mary and Sam drive to Los Angeles and visit friends. After spending several days, they head to Belfair. I remember when most communications were done through mail. When traveling, you could forward mail to a post office in the city you were headed to. That is rare these days. My sister has moved several times this past year and she would always fill out a new address form and she is lucky if she sees her mail within two weeks. This could be a problem when you are expecting medications coming...

  • Mary and Sam amble through southern Arizona

    Clydene Hostetler|Jan 26, 2023

I apologize for not writing last week’s diary. I had to have a tooth pulled and had a very bad infection. Still cannot open my mouth up to bite things but that might be a good thing. It sounds like Mary and Sam are on their way back and have several other stops along the way. I hope you are all staying warm. Friday, Jan. 14, 1949 This morning it was sunny and warm, no wind, so we went riding out beyond the first windmill. We brought back a veal to be killed and a cow about to come fresh. Also s...

  • Mary and Sam visit lots of folks in Arizona

    Jan 12, 2023

Mary and Sam are still in Arizona. It seems they know people everywhere they go, and it also seems they are looking at property to buy. Maybe they want to be snowbirds? Friday, Jan. 7, 1949 We got up early and ate at our favorite restaurant. Got my hair done and went through a few stores. Then I met Sam at 2 o’clock and we ate a sandwich. Out to see a piece of land Sam saw with a real estate woman in the morning. It is a lovely spot with cactus on it and “above the dust.” There would be a fine view of the city there and the hills and no one wou...

  • Mary and Sam tour Southwest and Mexico

    Clydene Hostetler|Jan 5, 2023

Mary and Sam attend a New Year's Eve party while on their hunting trip. Sam has been extremely successful hunting for ducks and geese. They eventually head south to Arizona and Mexico. Friday, Dec. 31, 1948 Sam got up at 6:45 a.m. and left to go hunting with Henry. So I went back to sleep, then they came back to get Sam's boots and I woke up. Again, I went to sleep and did not get up until 9:30 a.m. To the hotel and Laurice was just fixing her hair in pin curls after a shower. We ate breakfast...

  • Mary and Sam pursue geese on California adventure

    Clydene Hostetler|Dec 29, 2022

Hunting on Christmas. Go figure. I get a kick when Mary writes how they had to put chains on, dig out snow and a rock. I think we know it was Sam doing that. I always get a kick when Mary says he has done nothing. I am always amazed when she writes of him doing laundry, dishes and cooks a meal. Let's not forget he had the two rear tires fixed and probably does all the driving when they are on a trip. Just saying. Friday, Dec. 24, 1948 Arose early and cleaned cabin and cooler. Took all stuff out...

  • Thelers busy with planning trip, Christmas

    Clydene Hostetler|Dec 22, 2022

Mary and Sam are going on a hunting trip. Lovey got a little miffed at Mary about the plate thing. I think Lovey could be difficult at times, but Mary doesn't seem to care. Lovey is her friend. Friday, Dec. 17, 1948 Arose early and Sam went to Seattle on several errands. I took presents and went to Belfair. Delivered to Rudy, Schlange, Emmett, Rices, Grandma White, Hacketts, Cadys and Mary Ruths. All were fine but it was a job to stay but a few minutes each place. Then to Bremerton. Mrs....

  • Mary hosts Christmas party, gets into the holiday spirit

    Clydene Hostetler|Dec 15, 2022

This week’s diary was a fun read for me. Mary is in the Christmas spirit helping everywhere she can to prepare for gatherings etc. It made me want to put up Christmas light on the boat. Enjoy! Friday, Dec. 10, 1948 The day of the big party. Sam and I loaded the big truck and went to town. I picked up Eunice D. and we went to Alma Brelson’s, got their organ, stove, etc., and to the Temple where we unloaded it all with the help of Bill, Alma’s nephew. I helped set tables and then went to help...

  • Mary's life is full of Christmas anticipation

    Clydene Hostetler|Dec 8, 2022

More Christmas planning. Sam goes to Seattle and Mary writes he would be attending a “clan” meeting. He does return with a new overcoat, and it sounds like it is a beauty, as Mary would say. Weather seems a lot like it is here. Friday, Dec. 3, 1948 Today arose early and Mama had potato pancakes for breakfast. Very good. At 9:45 I went downtown to Conductresses Instruction Group where we had a very fine meeting. We had a nice lunch. Saw Mrs. Howell and several others I knew. Then at 3 I met Mam...

  • It's a hectic run-up to Thanksgiving Day 1948

    Clydene Hostetler|Nov 24, 2022

Mary, Sam and a friend go out for Thanksgiving dinner. Has anyone else noticed how Mary is having her hair done all the time? My mom used to get her hair done every five weeks. In between, she combed her own hair out. Clothes are important to Mary also. I think she was a person who tried to look nice all the time. I hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. Let the holiday season begin! Friday, Nov. 19, 1948 Arose late and made pancakes for breakfast. Then cleaned house and got my...

  • Mary's planning parties for the holidays

    Clydene Hostetler|Nov 17, 2022

Friday, Nov. 12, 1948 Today Bud and Squires came down and planted all day of the big stuff. Moved the roses and planted quite a lot in our new garden. Then Skenes came over and I fried smelt for lunch. In the afternoon everything was ready for the folks. About 6, Louie, Grace and the children came. We cooked dinner and then went over to the house. Mary Ruth and Jack came down with a lovely cake, so we all had cake and coffee. Then later in came Vera and Cole and we had quite a house full. They...

  • Mary continues with planting, planning and socializing

    Clydene Hostetler|Nov 10, 2022

I like to compare our weather at the time Mary is writing her diary. Sounds pretty much the same. In fact, it was the weather several years ago that got me into reading Mary’s diary. We were having snow in March and people were saying Belfair had never had snow this late. Mary’s diary showed they had, and on the exact same days. Friday, Nov. 5, 1948 Today I got up early and left for Bremerton. Met Maimie by the street corner. Roy Mitchell brought her to the dock. We met Bertha Attridge on the...

  • It's Halloween and voting time for Mary and Sam

    Clydene Hostetler|Nov 3, 2022

This week is Halloween and voting. I wish she would have wrote the last name of their candidate. He won. Mary cleans out her father's things in the little apartment that was above the garage. Very sad. Mary stays busy as ever! Friday, Oct. 29, 1948 Two ladies from the Mormon Society in Bremerton came to talk about the quilt and they have it all settled now. Then Betty Fischler and Wilma Rasmussen came for the flowers, and we talked and talked. At 4 I picked up Helen Mitchell and Blanche Hackett...

  • In wake of Papa's death, Mary and Sam travel

    Clydene Hostetler|Oct 27, 2022

Mary is still mourning the death of her father and a couple of times she speaks of it. Mary and Sam have left town and are in Canada to help break the sadness. When they get home, Sam takes the dog and goes duck hunting. Friday, Oct. 22, 1948 Today we ate breakfast downstairs and checked out of the hotel. To the dock and could not get on the 11:15 ferry but at 12:15 got on the Princess Kathleen and arrived in Nanaimo at 3. Then it was 73 miles to Victoria so now we have a motel a couple of...

  • Mary finds her father lying in his bathroom

    Clydene Hostetler|Oct 20, 2022

This was a very sad week for Mary and her family. Her dad died and she is in shock. I think this is the first time in almost 15 years of transcribing her diary that she shows so much emotion. She loved her father. He lived his final years with Mary and Sam in the apartment above their garage. Friday, Oct. 15, 1948 Today I arose early and got my work done, though I was tired. Sam washed clothes after I got started. Squires came down and planted 42 wild azaleas. Sam went duck hunting and got one...

  • Mary and Sam shifting from summer to fall

    Clydene Hostetler|Oct 13, 2022

Fall is sneaking up on Mary. She still makes the effort to sit in the sun when it is out. She even has a hammock. Can you picture Mary in her hammock in the sun doing her nails? Friday, Oct. 8, 1948 A very warm sunny day and I cleaned good. Squires finished all the transplanting we can do until we have a good frost and can move dahlias and roses. Sam got up late and went to Seattle for repairs on a machine. I finished marking the balance of the dahlias. Also laid out in the sun in the hammock...

  • Mary shops, socializes and attends to club business

    Clydene Hostetler|Oct 6, 2022

Mary's dad caught a skunk in a trap. Now you know that must have been a bit of a challenge to remove it without getting sprayed. The terminology "hair spray" wasn't being used yet and Mary refers to it as "hair lacquer." I think hair spray is more ladylike. More food, flowers, shopping in Seattle and meetings. Mary is a busy gal this week. Friday, Oct. 1, 1948 Arose early and picked up Ruth Small. We parked car and caught the 8:30 ferry. We parted on 2nd Ave. to go to our respective meetings....

  • Mary and Sam clean their extra households

    Clydene Hostetler|Sep 29, 2022

Mary and Sam go to the Puyallup Fair with the Fischlers. Mary is a cleaning fool this week. When she speaks of the cabin it is next to the house and the apartment that her father lives is on the second floor of the garage. Taking care of all three places is quite a job. Friday, Sept. 24, 1948 Did not set clock right so it did not alarm so I called Sam and we dressed in a hurry, but Fischlers were here before we were ready. Ate breakfast at Pearl's Diner in Purdy. Very good. To Fair at 12. The...

  • Mary's handiwork amply rewarded at fair

    Clydene Hostetler|Sep 22, 2022

There was a fair going on this week and Mary entered some exhibits. Mary does not say which fair, but she won some prizes. Maybe the Puyallup? Remember from last week her regular hairdresser left and would be out of town for a while? So, Mary gets her hair done at a beauty salon in Gorst. Summer is coming to an end, folks, so enjoy what's left. Friday, Sept. 17, 1948 Slept late as I was tired. Then cleaned house and up to see about taking weaving to the fair. Called on Robertsons on my way home....

  • Mary unpacks from Columbia trip; a sudden death

    Clydene Hostetler|Sep 15, 2022

What is considered “tame” blackberries? They go crazy! I just learned this week the person who does Mary’s hair is a man. Unusual for that time. Remember when cleaning your shoes and mending your clothes were a common thing? I used to use white shoe polish to put on my tennis shoes to keep them looking good. I did not iron my hair though. Friday, Sept. 10, 1948 Slept until late and then cleaned house. Put away my bag that has been unpacked since Tuesday. A wonderful day and lovely out. To the s...

  • Thelers have a spotty week pursuing salmon

    Clydene Hostetler|Sep 8, 2022

There is no way I could keep up with Mary's schedule. I got tired just reading this week's diary. Driving back and forth twice from the fishing camp to Belfair, plus a trip to Seattle. She writes of the reoccurring winds that come up on the Columbia River and that is very common. Often the winds will reach 15 mph. Friday, Sept. 3, 1948 Arose early and saw all my mother's flowers. She has the finest flower garden in the block. To Frederick's and bought a black satin hat for winter and a copper...
