North Mason girls headed to Sun Dome after big win

The Bulldogs are headed to the Dome.

The North Mason High School girls basketball team shrugged off a tough shooting first half and rolled past District 2 champion Renton 44-30 in the opening round of the 2A state girls basketball tournament Friday night at Mount Tahoma High School.

With that win, the Bulldogs moved on to face District IV champion W.F. West, which lost 53-41 to Archbishop Murphy on Saturday in Chehalis, Wednesday night (after the Journal's press time) in the Round of 12 at the Sun Dome in Yakima.

The winner of that game advanced to face Deer Park at 7:15 p.m. today in quarterfinal round in Yakima.

North Mason (16-8 overall) took a four-game winning streak into Wednesday's game after winning its final three games of the 2A District 3 tournament and then defeating the Redhawks (6-19).

North Mason is making its first state tournament appearance since 1989.

Two earn WIAA weekly honors

Mary M. Knight High School junior Cloey Fletcher and North Mason High School senior Adrianne Tupolo earned Athlete of the Week honors for Week 24 (Feb. 17-23).

Fletcher averaged 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 steals over the final three games of the 1B District IV Tournament. Her performances helped lead Mary M. Knight to its first state berth in nine years and a third-place finish in District IV.

Adrianne Tupolo has been the backbone of North Mason's basketball program for the past three seasons.

In her team's final four district playoff games, Tupolo averaged 27 and nine rebounds per game.

She was the runner-up for league MVP for two consecutive years. An All-League First Team selection for three straight years, she has tied the school record for most points in a game twice with 36 points. Adrianne helped lead her team to the state playoffs for the first time since 1988 with a victory over North Kitsap on Feb. 22
