Mark Steven Walmsley was born in Shelton on May 7, 1954 to Cyril and Charlotte Walmsley. He passed away in Hoodsport on April 18, 2025. Mark grew up in Shelton, Seattle and eventually Hoodsport, graduating from Shelton High School in 1972. He then continued his education graduating from Huxley College in Bellingham.
Mark was an outdoor kid. When he was young, he had a horse he often rode in the Hoodsport area. He loved tennis which was a sport he continued to enjoy throughout his life. But most of all, he relished hiking in the Olympics. He and his stepdad logged many miles together or with their friends and families. This enjoyment turned into a career with the U.S. Park Service and then the U. S. Forest Service.
Mark's work with the Forest Service was as a backcountry ranger/wilderness expert. He liked going into the remote areas, working on the trails and meeting hikers. He always had cookies with him as a way to introduce himself. His boss said years later that Mark still brought him cookies when he visited. He also went on many search-and-rescue missions and fought forest fires for many years.
Another focus in Mark's life was writing poetry. His writings dealt with nature and his job as well as "life topics." Some of his poems were published. Mark loved open mic opportunities to recite his work. If there was live music involved, all the better.
Mark was out hiking and going for long walks until the end, taking pictures of the beauty he saw and sending his pictures to friends and relatives.
Mark was predeceased by his parents Cyril and Charlotte and his stepdad Chuck, and is survived by his sister Mary, half-brother Matt, nephew Dan and his kids Jaxon, Bennett and Frank. He loved being their great-uncle. In addition, he is survived by an extended family and friends. He will be missed.
A time for a memorial has not yet been determined. If you wish, donations may be made to Tunnels to Towers.
