Bernice Pauline (Emsley) Likes

Bernice Pauline (Emsley) Likes, 85, passed away peacefully at home in Vancouver, WA, on November 6, 2024. Born on January 1, 1939, in Shelton, WA, Bernice was a beloved daughter of Carl and Pauline (Legall) Emsley. She spent over six decades in Shelton where she raised her daughter, Laura and enjoyed a 30-year career at Safeway, where she formed lasting relationships with her coworkers and customers.

Known for her warmth and friendliness, Bernice delighted in hosting holidays, dancing, playing cards, and social gatherings. She never missed a birthday and loved celebrating the people she cherished. Her talent for cooking made her meals memorable, and her caring, generous nature touched the lives of all who knew her.

In her early 60's, Bernice retired from Safeway and began a new chapter of life in Florence, AZ. There, she and her second husband, Bill Soppeland, spent 20 unforgettable years surrounded by a close-knit group of friends. Their days were filled with laughter, love, and adventure as they traveled in their fifth wheel and spent time within their lively social circle. Whether gathering for meals, sharing stories, or playing cards, Bernice and Bill found immense joy in the friendships they developed. Even after Bill's passing in 2015, Bernice remained in Florence, staying connected to her friends who became like family. In 2019, she moved to Vancouver, WA, to be closer to her daughter, Laura (Likes) Rustay.

Bernice is lovingly survived by her daughter, Laura, and son-in-law, John Rustay. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill, her brother Nick Emsley, and her sister Marie Neal.

A celebration of Bernice's life will be held at the Shelton Civic Center, located at 525 W. Cota Street, Shelton, WA, on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 a.m. Friends and loved ones are invited to join her family in honoring her memory and the lasting impact of her love and kindness.
