Alleged drunken driver causes 3-car collision

A woman who allegedly caused a three-car collision March 3 on state Route 3 has been arrested for vehicular assault.

Charges are pending for Shelton resident Suzan Rolland, 57, after a trooper at the scene found Rolland “smelled heavily of alcohol,” according to a probable cause document.

Rolland was traveling north in a Ford Explorer of milepost 5 just north of Shelton when she crossed over the center line and sideswiped a Toyota Tacoma driven by Mario Lucas, 57, of Shelton. She then hit a Honda Civic head-on driven by Matthew Barr, 32, of Shelton. Barr and his passenger were injured and taken to Mason General.

Prosecutors asked for $5,000 bail for Rolland and she was released on her own recognizance by Judge Monty Cobb at a preliminary hearing March 4. Her arraignment is March 18 in Mason County Superior Court.

The accident fully blocked the highway, according to the State Patrol.

Burglar scales O’Reilly’s roof

Police arrested Douglas Hanson, 64, for attempted burglary after receiving a call from a Shelton O’Reilly Auto Parts employee saying someone was on the roof.

Shelton Police Officer Ortona said he was dispatched to the store for a possible burglary in progress March 2.

Employee Andrew Koonard was inside O’Reilly’s office when he heard “something on the roof,” according to Ortona’s probable cause document. Koonard and coworker Burton Tuenge said “there was someone with a saw on the roof, they could hear the person trying to cut through what they believed was the concrete,” Ortona wrote.

“Koonard said it sounded like someone was on top of the roof trying to cut it open and gain entry. Koonard stated that is when he exited the building and saw a SUV near the emergency ladder. Koonard was able to get the license plate on the vehicle,” according to the probable cause document.

A sheriff’s deputy located the vehicle, which is registered to Hanson, in the Shelton Walmart parking lot and arrested Hanson.

“I advised Hanson O’Reilly employees saw his vehicle fleeing the scene and he laughed saying he was speeding away,” Ortona wrote. Police found a grinder power tool in the back of Hanson’s vehicle, the probable cause document states.

Judge Monty Cobb released Hanson on his own recognizance. His arraignment is scheduled for March 18 in Mason County Superior Court.
