Humane Society hosts Saturday fundraiser in Belfair

Furever Love, a fundraiser for the Humane Society of Mason County and Kitten Rescue of Mason County is this Saturday at Bent Bine Brewery in Belfair.

Adoptable pets will be at the event, and there will be raffles, a live auction and kissing booth, according to the organizers.

“Last year, HSMC experienced significant growth in both capacity and animals served. We moved into our new Belfair office and Community Clinic! Our small-yet-mighty staff and team of dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly to promote responsible pet ownership, deliver low-cost veterinary care, and facilitate foster homes and the adoption of animals in our care. In 2023, HSMC placed 606 companion animals in loving, forever homes,” HSMC Executive Director Katherine Johnson wrote in a letter to donors.

“One of our proudest achievements was the growth of our spay and neuter clinic. HSMC’s veterinary team performed 3,096 surgeries. This is an incredible increase from just 1,142 spay and neuter procedures in 2022,” she wrote.

Johnson shared the society’s 2023 Impact Report with the Journal. The report details some of the work HSMC accomplished thanks to donor money, including having on-call animal emergencies services and partnerships with Mission Creek Corrections Center for Women and Ziggy’s Cat Lounge, according to the report.

Mission Creek, in Belfair, fostered 190 cats and 26 dogs.

“This program has been beneficial not only to HSMC, which is able to provide loving and quiet foster homes, but also to the women who benefit from caring for the animals,” according to the report.

Ziggy’s Cat Lounge in Bremerton has helped more than 100 cats find homes and “exclusively partners with HSMC for adoptable cats and kittens,” the report says.

Johnson told the Journal about five dogs that have been with HSMC for several months and need permanent homes.

Simon, a 1-year-old male retriever, black Labrador mix, Guinness, an 11-month-old male retriever, black Labrador mix, Hadlee, a 7-year-old female greyhound, mixed breed, Copper, a 2-year-old male hound, mixed breed and Angel, a 5-year-old female retriever, yellow Labrador mix, “really need homes,” Johnson said.
