Flagging, computer courses at OC Shelton

Olympic College Shelton is offering a course on understanding your personal technology from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays Feb. 6-29, and a course on flagging from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 8.

Dental exams offered at Shelton schools

The Shelton School District has joined with Big Smiles to offer dental care at schools.

Dental exams can be scheduled by filling out and returning paper forms sent home by schools or registering at http://www.myschooldentist.com.

The dental care includes a complete exam, X-rays, cleaning, fluoride and sealants when necessary, and in some cases, restorative care such as fillings. Children who see a dentist regularly may have fewer health problems, such as early tooth loss due to dental decay, gum and heart disease, and impaired speech development.

The exams are Feb. 5 at Bordeaux Elementary, Feb. 6 at Evergreen Elementary, Feb. 7 at Mountain View Elementary, Feb. 7 at Olympic Middle School, Feb. 8 at Oakland Bay Junior High, Feb. 8 at Shelton High School, Feb. 9 at CHOICE High School and Feb. 9 at Cedar High School.

Proclamation honors Shelton School Board

The Shelton School Board was honored Tuesday evening with a proclamation noting School Board Recognition Month at its board meeting at Mountain View Elementary School.

The proclamation noted that the state’s “1,477 locally elected school boards of directors and nine elected educational service districts are the core of the public education governance system in our state, serve more than 1.1 million students, have a combined annual budget of over 15 billion, and employ approximately 120,000 people.”

The proclamation also noted that “school boards play a crucial role in promoting student learning and achievement by creating a vision, establishing policies and budgets, and setting clear standards of accountability for all involved.”

The members of the Shelton School Board are Chair Matt Welander, Vice Chair Keri Davidson, Karla Knudsen-Johnston, Lauren Gilmore and Becky Cronquist. The nonvoting student representatives on the board are Aiden Underberg of Cedar High School, Rhylea Sanders of CHOICE High School and Abigayle Hurst of Shelton High School.

In November, the Washington State School Directors’ Association named the Shelton School Board a 2023 Board of Distinction. The award recognized 34 school districts in the state for demonstrating exceptional leadership and commitment to student success.

Shelton was among the “medium”-size districts honored, which included Anacortes, Arlington, Kelso, Mount Vernon, Peninsula, Pullman, Quincy, Riverview, University Place, Walla Walla, Wapato and White River.
