Area teams return to action after holidays

Shelton boys basketball

Shelton won 45-41 against Elma on Dec. 29 at Terry Gregg Court and earned a 54-36 win against Hockinson on Dec. 28 in Shelton.

The Highclimbers (4-5, 1-1) traveled to Centralia on Tuesday to play the Tigers. Shelton hosts Aberdeen at 7 tonight in the Mini-Dome.

Shelton wrestling

Shelton wrestling finished second at the Greely Open wrestling tournament at Graham-Kapowsin High School in Graham on Dec. 28.

Aiden Dodge won the 120-pound tournament, defeating Orting’s Tyler Brinkman, Eatonville’s Mark Devera, Rogers (Puyallup) Vincent Kahura and Kentridge’s Kealiiahonui Ohumukini to win the title. Shelton’s Hunter Leth won the 190-pound B tournament, defeating South Kitsap’s Kashion Pangelinan-Harris, Foss’ Mckaleb Yazzie, Camas’ Josh Webb and Sumner’s Richard Phon.

Bradley Eveland won the 215-pound tournament, defeating Shelton’s Lucas Mobley, Eatonville’s Zachary Beane Perdue, Rainier’s Matthew Kenny and Sumner’s Lincoln Campbell to capture the crown.

Noa Tuitea won the 285-pound B tournament for the Highclimbers with wins against Shelton’s Phoenix Goldberg, Puyallup’s Jordan Hardt, Rainier’s Ryder Cruse and Bellarmine Prep’s Adam Vargas.

Shelton’s Dwayne Nunez-Lopez finished second in the 285-pound tournament and Andre Jackson finished second in the 215-pound B tournament. Kyle Ragsdale placed second in the 106-pound tournament.

Mark Sanchez placed fourth in the 215-pound B tournament for Shelton. Aaron Cervantes finished fourth in the 150-pound tournament and John Bourgault finished fourth in the 144-pound B tournament for the Highclimbers.

Shelton hits the road to wrestle against Aberdeen at 7 tonight in an Evergreen Conference dual wrestling meet.

North Mason boys basketball

North Mason’s Dec. 28 game against Muckleshoot Tribal School in Auburn was canceled.

The Bulldogs (2-4, 1-3) traveled to Sequim on Tuesday for an Olympic League game. North Mason travels to Bremerton at 7 tonight to play Olympic in a league game.

North Mason Wrestling

North Mason’s Pedro Salvador won the 165-pound tournament, helping the Bulldogs earn a fourth-place team finish in the North Mason Hawkins Memorial Classic wrestling tournament Dec. 27 and 28 in Belfair.

Salvador pinned Olympic’s Wesley Tebo and Central Kitsap’s Curtis Schaefer to reach the semifinals, where he won in a 2-1 decision against North Kitsap’s Taylor Delmendo. Salvador pinned North Kitsap’s Josue May to win the tournament.

North Mason’s Gavin McFarland finished third in the 126-pound tournament and Charles Broughton placed third in the 150-pound tournament for the Bulldogs.

North Mason’s Jose Gaspar finished fourth in the 144-pound tournament, Cooper Stapleton finished fourth in the 157-pound tournament and Jayse Garcia placed fourth in the 175-pound tournament.

North Mason competes next at the Matman Classic, beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Central Kitsap High School in Silverdale.
