Music from land and sea at Hoodstock

An eclectic lineup of rock, country and funk bands can be enjoyed from land or sea at the seventh annual Hoodstock Music and Arts Festival staged Aug. 15-17 at the Union Marina and a new venue, Robin Hood Village Resort in Union.

"It's a fun, community-based, all-inclusive weekend," said Shannon Crabb-Stanton, who books the bands. "We're going to showcase our local talent."

The concert has been on the water the past four years, and Hoodstock co-founder Kelli Kohout said she's hearing from people who wanted to enjoy the shows on land as well. "They can go to this iconic resort and hear music," she said of the Robin Hood Village Resort. Tickets can also be booked aboard the Lady Alderbrook.

Concertgoers can park at the New Community Church at 951 E. Dalby Road and the Mason County Fire station 6 at 50 E. Seattle St. and catch a shuttle bus to the event.

Kohout, who handles promotions, calls it "a festival with a purpose." Hoodstock finances programs for the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group's Salmon Center in Belfair, and donates music and instruments to the Hood Canal School District.

The music kicks off with Hoodstock Pre-Funk, featuring the eight-piece Olympia funk band Groove Lab from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 15 at Hood Canale. Admission is $10, and patrons must be 21 or older.

The lineup from 6 to 10 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Robin Hood Village Resort features Union City Council Bluegrass Band, Nick Cain and The Kitty Mae Band.

Members of the Union City Council Bluegrass Band won't have far to drive - it's the hometown band. The quintet formed over a mutual love of traditional bluegrass. Cain has written about 75 country and rock songs, and lists as inspirations the music of Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, Eric Church and Jason Aldean.

Country singer/guitarist Kitty Mae got her start singing the national anthem at rodeos, including the renowned Omak Stampede, and honed her skills busking at the Pike Place Market in Seattle for a few years.

The Saturday lineup on the Main Stage on the water features The Carlile Family Band, Suped Up Fjord, Lovely Colours and the Olson Brothers Band.

The Carlile Family Band from Curlew perform a mix of folk, Americana and indie sounds and play nine instruments, including box drums and banjos. The band writes, records and produces its songs.

The rock quintet Suped Up Fjord plays classic rock and country by the likes of AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Bob Seger, Charlie Daniels, Patsy Cline and The Beatles. The Seattle-based band Lovely Colours plays rock 'n' roll. The Olson Brothers Band hails from Olympia.

The Saturday lineup at Robin Hood Village showcases The Tami Frost Trio at noon, Honey Babe at 1 p.m., The Hipocrats at 2 p.m., AuraShine at 3 p.m., DNA at 4 p.m., Bandits of the Animal Kingdom at 6 p.m. and The Hinges at 8 p.m. Admission is free from noon to 5 p.m. and all ages are welcome. After 5 p.m., patrons must be at least 21 years old.

The child of professional musicians, Tami Frost has been performing since she was a kid. Honey Babe is a folk, blues and Americana trio featuring singer Cailey Robinson, guitarist Steve Madsen and Freddy Bear on his box.

On its website, the Seattle-based duo The Hipocrats describe themselves as "your go-to Americana dreamers, seamlessly blending hair-raising harmonies, spunky lyrical imagery, and melodies that just stick with you." The Seattle band AuraShine plays original tunes and covers. The band DNA plays county, rock and pop.

Formed in Central Washington in 2019, Bandits of the Animal Kingdom play danceable pop covers and originals. The Olympia band The Hinges play psychedelic folk.
