CITY BRIEFS

Portillo is Shelton's Officer of the Year

Gary Portillo, who Tuesday night evening was sworn in as a corporal for the Shelton Police Department, is the department's Officer of the Year.

Portillo received the award at the Shelton City Council meeting. Portillo is an 11-year law enforcement veteran who was hired by the Shelton Police Department in 2021. Before coming to Shelton, he was a law enforcement officer for the Nevada Department of Public Safety and the Clark County School District. With those agencies, he was a probation officer, Capitol police officer and a school resource officer. Portillo earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice.

With the Shelton Police Department, he has also been officer in charge, field training officer, detective and a less-than-lethal weapons instructor.

City moves to buy water truck

The Shelton City Council on Tuesday evening gave preliminary approval to buying a new 3/4-ton 4x4 truck for the city's water department.

The council can make the purchase official with a vote at its Feb. 6 meeting.

The budget request of $70,000, if approved, will be placed in the Public Works Department water budget.

According to the city report, the new truck would replace a 2003 half-ton pickup. The department uses three 1/2-ton, two-wheel drive pickups that average 19 years old. The department states that replacing these trucks over the next few years with new 4x4 vehicles will allow for easier mobility during inclement weather and increase vehicle safety and reliability.
