Edith Borgny Nygård Jaques

Edith Borgny Nygård Jaques, 88, passed away quietly in her sleep on the evening of November 13th, 2023.

Edith, or "Borgny" as she was affectionately known in Shelton, was born on September 22, 1935 to Ivar Kornelius Nygård and Solveig Emilie (Kjorslevik) on the small island of Rugsund in the Nordfjord on the west coast of Norway. She was one of ten children. She had two brothers, Egil and Jan, and seven sisters: Gudrun, Anny, Else, Ingrid, Lilly, Signe and Magny.

Borgny loved children, especially babies. After basic schooling, she started nursing school and afterwards attended midwifery school in Bergen. She graduated as a midwife in September 1961. Borgny moved to Sauda in 1962 and in 1965 she travelled to South Africa as a missionary with the Norwegian Mission Society working at Ekombe Mission Hospital in Zululand Province for 5 years. She travelled back to Norway in 1971 and in July of 1972 she immigrated to Canada. In April of 1977 she married Dr. Norman Jaques in New Westminster, British Columbia. He had two children, Guy and Hilary so Borgny married into a ready-made family and enjoyed being a mother. They moved shortly after to Shelton, WA.

Borgny became a very active member of Faith Lutheran Church where she contributed her talents in a variety of ways including quilting, making book bags for children, singing in the choir, and making her famous lefse. Borgny made many friends and cherished her friendships throughout her life. She was an expert knitter and was known for making many intricate Norwegian designs. Borgny had a deep faith in God and the Faith Lutheran Church was her second family.

She is survived by her son Guy Jaques (Melissa), daughter Hilary Stenstream (Dan), sister Gudrun Höydal, sister Magny Nygård, and numerous dearly loved nieces and nephews in Norway. She is also survived by her four grandchildren: David and Emma Jaques and Andrew and Anna Stenstream.

Her memorial service was held at Faith Lutheran Church on November 17th, 2023. The service can be viewed on the Shelton Faith Lutheran Church Facebook page.
