August car show in downtown Shelton drew 151 entrants

Despite being rescheduled and staged on short notice, the Cruisin' Through Time car show Aug. 27 in downtown Shelton drew 151 entrants.

That's the word from Mason County Historical Museum Executive Director Liz Arbaugh, who gave a report on the event Nov. 7 at the Shelton City Council's regular meeting. Her organization and the Shelton Downtown Merchants Association co-sponsored the event on West Railroad Avenue.

"Amy Cooper really spearheaded it - she did a fantastic job," Arbaugh said. "We put it together in about six to eight weeks."

Of the 151 entrants, 94 were from Mason County, 37 from outside the county and four from Oregon and Idaho, Arbaugh said. Because the car show started at 7 a.m., many entrants attended a nearby car show the previous day and then stayed overnight, she said. The event cost $4,740 to stage, Arbaugh told the council.

The car show has traditionally been the biggest annual fundraiser for the Mason County Historical Society. Formed in 1969, the nonprofit group operates a museum at 427 W. Railroad Ave.

The group had started planning for the car show's return this summer, but "we had a major shift on our board - most of the talent that produced the show left the board," Jan Goodpastor, president of the group, told the Journal in August. "We needed help."

"It was nice to have it back," Mayor Eric Onisko said at the Nov. 7 meeting.

"I think that's why we had such a good turnout, because there was history behind it, and people were kind of watching for it," Arbaugh replied.

Wanted: Volunteers to install playground equipment

The City of Shelton's Parks and Recreation Department needs volunteers to help install a new playground Dec. 9 at Northcliff Neighborhood Park, near the Terrace Heights neighborhood.

According to a news release from the city, the department is looking for "volunteers who can follow directions, work in a group, and have a basic understanding of tools and how they're used." Youth groups, service clubs and people who are interested can contact Parks and Recreation Supervisor Jordanne Krumpols by Dec. 1 at [email protected].
