Shelton earns first league win against Centralia

Shelton earned its first league win of the season 20-6 against Centralia on Friday night at Jack Stark Field in Shelton.

"I think we battled," said head coach Mark Smith. "I don't think we played the cleanest game. We left some points on the field. We were down inside the 10-yard line a couple times and couldn't get it in, missed a field goal, missed an extra point so there's some points there we had an opportunity for. To Centralia's credit, they didn't let us have them. They played hard. They did their job, we didn't do our job."

The game was tied at halftime 6-6, but the Highclimbers scored 14 points in the second half and held Centralia scoreless.

"Wins are hard to come by. They're not easy so wins always feel better," Smith said. "What feels even better than wins is when you play a good, clean game. We just have not been able to put that type of game together for some reason this year."

Smith highlighted senior Omar Zepada, who scored a couple touchdowns in the second half. He also spoke highly of junior Ben Morford, junior Hunter Leth and senior Jerome Gouley each had a great game on defense.

"We won a football game. We're focused on short-term success, immediate short-term success so we're looking at trying to play a cleaner football game this Friday and build upon that from last Friday," Smith said. "One game at a time, if that adds up creating success later, we're hoping to make the last game against Aberdeen at the end of the season a very meaningful game. If we can do that, then we've accomplished success at the end of the season."

The Highclimbers (2-4, 1-2) travel to Tumwater on Friday to take on the Thunderbirds in a conference game. Tumwater is 6-0 overall, 3-0 in conference games and has scored 55 points in each of their past three games.

"I've been very impressed with Tumwater as far as their execution, as far as their physicality, I really think that they've got a really good-looking squad this year," Smith said. "Seems a little different, so we're going to have our work cut out for us. We're going to have to show up and understand how to play to that effort and that physicality and that execution. If we can do that, then we might make things interesting but no one has done it yet. It'll be interesting."
