Meeting Oct. 18 on Theler wetlands trail projects

A public information meeting on the planned restoration and improvements to the Mary E. Theler Wetlands trail in Belfair will be from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Belfair branch of the Timberland Library, 23081 NE state Route 3.

On Sept. 26, the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group Project Manager Andy Hokit and state Department of Fish and Wildlife employees talked about the goals and benefits of the project. A news release from HCSEG states the scope of the work includes restoring the trail that has been closed due to a breach in an existing levee along the trail and addressing the flooding that occurs on Roessel Road as a result of the breach. According to the group, the breached levee has altered the landscape from freshwater to saltwater, which affects the restoration actions.

The project includes replacing the levees that hold the closed section of the trail and digging a new tidal channel that more closely mimics the other natural channels in the area. Roessel Road will be elevated where it bends around the Golden Bell Manufactured Home Park to eliminate flooding.

The salmon group states Mason County will assist in the design and construction at Roessel Road and the other restoration projects will be funded by state and federal grants. A raised boardwalk will be built in the footprint of the removed levy. The work will proceed after the transfer of the land previously owned by the North Mason School District was accepted by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and finalized earlier this month.
