Prep football practice starts Wednesday

High school football season officially begins Wednesday, with North Mason potentially kicking off the season as early as possible by practicing at midnight as they did last year.

Shelton and Mary M. Knight will also begin practice Wednesday, with the season kicking off Sept. 2 with the Mason County Cup in Belfair. Shelton won last year's contest 39-18 at Jack Stark Field.

The Highclimbers face another Olympic League opponent in Week 2, hosting Bremerton in Shelton's home opener. Shelton's other nonleague game is on the road Sept. 29 against Montesano.

Shelton hosts 2022 state-semifinalist W.F. West in its opening Evergreen Conference game of the season Sept. 15, and travels to state semifinalist Tumwater on Friday, Oct. 13, for a league game.

North Mason travels to Klahowya in Week 2 for the only other nonleague game of the season. The Bulldogs begin Olympic League games in Week 3, hosting Kingston. Week 4 features a trip to the state runner-up from 2022, North Kitsap. North Mason will make two trips to Clallam County, facing Sequim in Week 7 and Port Angeles in Week 9 to wrap up the regular season.

Mary M. Knight opens the season a week later than Shelton and North Mason, traveling to Amanda Park on Sept. 9 to take on Lake Quinault for the only nonleague game of the season. The Owls host Clallam Bay in the home opener Sept. 16 and take on Lake Quinault again Sept. 23 in a 1B Coastal League game in Matlock. MMK wraps up the regular season on the road Oct. 28 against Evergreen Lutheran at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma.

Cross country, boys golf and tennis, girls soccer and swimming and volleyball all begin Aug. 21.
