Olympic College Shelton hosts Resource Fair

Olympic College Shelton hosted a resource fair for current and potential students April 19 throughout the campus.

Booths were spread out between the main building, library and outside, with many community groups in attendance.

"I was pleasantly surprised at the number of attendants that we had at the Resource Fair," OC Shelton Director Allison Smith wrote in an email to the Journal. "I saw numerous community members who were unfamiliar to me on campus that day and that is one of the objectives of the event, to welcome our neighbors to our campus. Additionally, we had to turn away vendors who wanted to participate simply because we don't have a large enough campus. The lesson we learned is to host the next event later in the season so we can utilize our outside areas."

Miss Washington 2022 Regan Gallo ran a workshop on vaping risks. The career exploration workshop was well-attended, according to Smith. There was also a demonstration from the welding program.

"I received a big thumbs-up from our outside vendors, many of whom said it was one of the best resource fairs they'd been involved in," Smith wrote. "We had 21 outside vendors and Olympic College sent representatives from 17 college departments to provide face to face assistance to current and potential students."

Smith wrote the goal of the resource fair was to provide resources for current and future students to help them focus on their education. The college just launched a construction trades program this month and the campus is open to the public.

"We are seeing more interest from students every day," Smith wrote. "The number of inquiries increases steadily, but higher education has surely suffered due to the pandemic. We are working hard to shift our offerings to suit the needs of our students, many of whom still want to attend their classes virtually."
