Joan Cliff Borden Winne

Joan Cliff Borden, also known as Grandma and Teeny Grandma, was born in Tacoma, WA on March 20th, 1936 to Frank and Violet Borden. She passed away on Feb. 28th, 2023, with her children and close relatives by her side.

Joan graduated from Stadium High School, Tacoma, WA in 1954. She then met her future husband, William (Bill) H. Winne at Shady Beach, along Hood Canal. They were married on June 4th, 1954 and remained married until Bill passed away in November 2000.

Bill and Joan moved to Arizona shortly after being married, living in various locations throughout AZ. They built their family, having four children, while living in AZ. Eventually they moved back to Shelton to be closer to family, friends, and the Hood Canal where they raised their family in the historical Grisdale home. Joan was a very small person, but made up for it with her strength, stubbornness, and sense of humor – and that laugh will be one of her most memorable traits.

Joan had several different and unique jobs. She worked shucking oysters for Olympia Oyster Company, and then worked as a Pinkerton security guard for Simpson Timber Company. Joan's first and foremost love was her family and friends. She loved babies. She was still down on the floor playing with them, up until the day of her death.

Her second love was swimming on the shores of Hood Canal, specifically Twanoh State Park area. You could find her laying on the beach on most any hot summer day. Joan raised her family to share the same love of the sun and water. Joan loved reading and remained an avid reader throughout her life. Her final job was working as a library aid for Timberland Library, where she was immersed in a world of books. Joan also loved food. Not only eating and critiquing food, she enjoyed preparing meals, feeding people, and anybody dropping by at mealtime; especially loved feeding her "bachelor Club" during the holiday seasons. Joan didn't necessarily celebrate holidays, as she said every day should be a holiday, and should be treated as such. However, family members (and others) could always expect to receive their favorite dessert for their birthday.

Joan is survived by her daughter – Billie (BG) Workman of Shelton, son - Bret Winne of Shelton, WA, Jill Watson (husband Les Watson) of Shelton, WA, and Robin Kingery (husband Doug Kingery) of Olympia, WA; sister Gayle Ingram of Tacoma, WA, Frank Borden of Shelton, WA., and sister-in-law Pat Orr of Shelton, WA, and brother-in-law Chuck Winne of Hoodsport, WA; 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephew, and extended family.

A celebration of life will be planned for a future date. In lieu of gifts, please send donations in Joan's name to Timberland Regional Library, Shelton, WA.
