Cervantes wins region title in just 31 seconds

Shelton High School sophomore EliBeth Cervantes looks for an opening against Hoquiam's Meribel Mazariegoes during a 145-pound semifinal bout at the 1B/2B/1A/2A Region 2 girls wrestling tournament Saturday at the Mini-Dome in Shelton. Cervantes pinned Mazariegos in one minute, 56 seconds. Cervantes went on to pin Washoughal's Aliyha Vargas, top photo, in 31 seconds during the championship bout.

She held it in as long as she could.

In the seconds after EliBeth Cervantes became the first girls wrestler from Shelton High School to win a regional title in 14 years, she danced her way through congratulatory fist bumps and short hugs from her teammates and coaches until she reached her father, Henry.

As father and daughter embraced, the emotion flowed.
