Shelton’s Jayden Lovingfoss and Wyatt Wagner finished fourth in the District 4 boys tennis tournament Oct. 27 and 28 at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver to earn a state tournament berth.

Shelton boys golf

Shelton’s Holmes Waltermire finished 21st at the District 4 boys golf tournament on Oct. 24 and 25 at Orchard Hills Country Club in Washougal.

Waltermire carded an 89 and an 82 for a two-day total of 171, 31-over par, and his 21st place finish should earn him a berth into the state tournament in May. Waltermire finished in a tie for 20th with two others and finished second in the playoff.

Shelton coach Lorna Martinson said Waltermire made a 50-foot putt on hole 4 in the second round.

Carson Harmon was the other Shelton golfer to make it to day two, finishing in a tie for 32nd, shooting an 86 and 94 for a two-day total of 180.

Playing in the first day, but not finishing in the top 40 to make day two, was Ty Anthis with a 101, Isaac Dorcy with a 104 and Wyatt Anthis and Austin Covert each shot a 106.

“This course plays tough as it is a shot-making course, but the cold, wet weather made playing much more difficult,” Martinson told the Journal in an email. “All the players struggled with getting the right distances to the greens because of the weather and the big change in the condition of the golf course. The weather has been spectacular, so we did not get any play this season in these conditions. But our guys really worked hard to keep focused and play the best round they could. For some it worked out great, but others struggled. It is always tough to see a player struggle in their round and it is equally hard as a player to stay focused on hitting the next shot good. Our guys were tough and didn’t give up, so I was really proud of how they managed their game and effort in these tough conditions. Just so proud of this team and how they support each other and play this great game.”

Centralia’s Von Wasson won the tournament with a two-day total of 141, winning on the second playoff hole against Columbia River’s Noah Larson. Columbia River won the team title.
