Shelton boys golf

Shelton finished fourth as a team at the Evergreen Conference Championships Oct. 18 at Newaukum Valley Golf Course in Chehalis.

Holmes Waltermire was the highest Highclimber finisher in sixth place, shooting an 82. Austin Covert took 11th place with an 87 and Wyatt Anthis placed 16th with an 89. Carson Harmon carded a 92 to finish in 18th and Isaac Dorcy was right behind him in 19th place with a 93. Ty Anthis rounded out Shelton in 23rd place with a 100.

“The course presented all of our golfers some challenges with all the hazards on many holes, but they continued to battle and play their best,” Shelton coach Lorna Martinson told the Journal in an email. “Most of these guys got off to a bad start, so they really had to dig in to make some things happen down the stretch, which all of them did exactly that. Holmes Waltermire led the Highclimbers with a score of 82 and a sixth-place individual place. He sunk his approach shot from 85 yards on hole 11 for an eagle, so that was pretty exciting to watch. Austin Covert and Carson Harmon continued to drive the ball well in this championship. Austin had his best 18-hole score for us and got off to a blistering start being 1-over after 12 holes. Wyatt battled hard and ended up playing really steady on the back nine. Isaac Dorcy also had his best 18-hole score since starting golf for the Highclimbers. The senior leadership of Wyatt, Holmes and Isaac has been really important for our team this season and they delivered.”

Tumwater won the team title, W.F. West finished second and Aberdeen placed third.

In the final league match of the season, Shelton lost to Aberdeen 223-225 at Highland Golf Course in Cosmopolis.

Waltermire earned medalist honors with a 39. Covert shot a 44, Wyatt Anthis and Dorcy shot a 47 and Harmon shot a 48. Ty Anthis carded a 56 for the Highclimbers.

Shelton finished the regular season 6-3. The Highclimbers wrapped up the season Monday and Tuesday at the District IV Tournament at Orchard Hills Golf Course in Washougal, trying to reach the state tournament in May.
