HUB needs fashion designs by Halloween

The HUB (Hospitality, Unity, Belonging) Center for Seniors is reviving its runway show next year.

Beth Gizzi, executive director of the HUB, said the center has had a fashion show “on and off” since 2007, but COVID prompted an extended break.

Gizzi said the show in May will be the HUB’s first wearable art fashion show, and possibly the first of its kind for the area as well.

“We started a ‘found’ fashion show — items that are found in a thrift shop, like our own HUB shop — to showcase what great looks you can put together on a budget,” Gizzi said. “What we’re looking for in ‘wearable art’ would include painted purses or clothing, hand-tooled purses or belts, knitted or bead-work items, dyed fabrics, refashioned and repurposed clothing, and handmade jewelry and accessories.”

The HUB’s mission is to support independent living for seniors and people with disabilities, so Gizzi urges people to attend the 2023 show to support “a great cause” and local artists.

“A show like this brings together people of many backgrounds and ages,” Gizzi said. “We love throwing multigenerational events that encourage communication and shared memories with all ages.”

Gizzi said the HUB doesn’t want “vulgar, demeaning or hostile” submissions.

The runway show is scheduled May 13, but the deadline to submit an email of interest to Barbara Treick at [email protected] is Oct. 31, with a second deadline for submission of fashion designs to follow Feb. 28.

“We’ll be accepting applicants from Mason, Kitsap and Thurston counties to help us put on a great show,” Gizzi said. “We’re looking to receive designs early enough that we can craft those looks for the runway, as well as give the selected artists time to prepare for the show and raise awareness about the event.”

Gizzi said the HUB is looking for three pictures of each designer’s work to showcase their three favorite designs, and help the HUB select who will be in the show, although those specific submissions might not be what walks the runway.

“The number of applicants we get, and whether they can be combined with other artists’ looks, will have a large bearing on how many items are shown,” Gizzi said. “We’re looking for up to 20 looks to walk the runway. This could be more than 20 designers, depending on if the artists are sharing models and looks, or doing a model look all themselves.”

Artists will have the opportunity to sell additional items through pop-ups at the event, she said.

“We’re also looking for male and female models of all shapes and sizes, as well as all ages, so long as they’re 18 years or older,” said Gizzi, who added that prospective models, hair stylists, makeup artists and backstage volunteers should send emails of interest to [email protected] by Oct. 31.
