Garbage truck tips on state Route 3

A garbage truck tipped over due to a flat tire Sept. 12 on state Route 3 in Bremerton.

According to a Washington State Patrol report, the garbage truck was driving south and had a flat right-front tire that blew and caused the driver to lose control and tipped on its side.

The road was closed at milepost 35 just south of state Route 304 and the road was closed for more than three hours.

Recreational burn ban lifted

Mason County has lifted the recreational burn ban due to lower temperatures and higher humidity levels.

According to a news release, the national fire danger rating system was lowered from very high to high and as a result, the state Department of Natural Resources has rescinded its ban on recreational fires, which will now be allowed if they are in a fire pit or barbecue.

The Fire Marshal's Burn Restriction Policy maintains consistency throughout the rest of the county and the fire marshal's office has lifted the burn ban on recreational fires for those lands in the county that are not under DNR jurisdiction.

Grapeview man dies in hit and run

A Grapeview man was killed in a three-vehicle accident on state Route 16 near the Sprague Avenue exit early Friday morning.

According to the Washington State Patrol, William R. Laver, 51, died at the scene while riding a motorcycle. The suspected hit and run driver, who fled the scene and caused the accident, was Timothy R. Waldroop, and he was booked Saturday by authorities at Pierce County jail. The driver of the third vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma.

Car rolls over in U.S. 101 crash

A three-car collision, including a car rollover, occurred on U.S. Highway 101 near Lynch Road on Saturday afternoon.

According to a Washington State Patrol report, a car rolled over and one driver was transported for medical attention for precautionary reasons.

National Public Lands Day Sept. 24

The state Parks and Recreation Commission invites visitors to enjoy state parks and recreational areas Saturday in celebration of National Public Lands Day.

According to a news release, visitors are not required to display a Discover Pass for day-use visits to state Department of Natural Resources or Department of Fish and Wildlife lands. The day was established in 1994 and is held annually on the fourth Saturday in September. It is usually the nation's largest single-day volunteer effort and celebrates the connection between people and public lands, inspiring environmental stewardship and encouraging use of state land for education, recreation and health benefits.

Remaining free state parks days are Oct. 10 for World Mental Health Day, Nov. 11 for Veterans Day and Nov. 25 for Native American Heritage Day.

Shelton woman hurt in Lacey crash

A Shelton woman was injured in a two-car accident early Friday morning on Interstate 5 in Lacey.

According to a Washington State Patrol report, the drivers of both cars were arrested on suspected DUI. The Shelton woman was was rear-ended by a 33-year-old Oregon driver.

The Shelton woman was transported to St. Peters Hospital in Olympia and released. The Oregon driver was charged with vehicular assault.

Health advisory board openings

Mason County commissioners are asking for applications to fill two positions on the Mason County Housing and Behavioral Health Advisory Board.

According to a news release, the applicant must not have direct affiliations with agencies that receive funding. The board is looking for residents with an interest in public health, mental health, substance-use disorder, homelessness and affordable housing.

The Housing and Behavioral Health Advisory Board is a seven-member board appointed to advise the commissioners on use of state and local money to address affordable housing, homelessness and behavioral health treatment in the county.

The advisory board usually meets once per month on the fourth Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. with special meetings as necessary.
