Feeling it

Gill, Climbers roll past Bulldogs

Madison Gill was feeling it.

Was she ever.

Gill, a senior forward for the Shelton High School girls soccer team, scored two goals in each half as the Highclimbers topped Mason County Cup rival North Mason 6-0 on Sept. 8 at Phil Pugh Stadium in Belfair.

"It feels really good to come in," Gill said. "It's my last year playing soccer. I won't be here in college, so it feels really good to be coming out and playing with the ladies I grew up with."

As a sophomore during the COVID-altered spring 2021 season, Gill scored five of Shelton's eight goals and was the Journal's Offensive Most Valuable Player.

She didn't play soccer as a junior last fall, but returned to the pitch with gusto against the Bulldogs.

"It's all just about communication," Gill said. "I had great coaches growing up. They taught us how to look back for what lanes we're going to go in. My teammates communicate to me where to go and then they get it there."

Sophomores Ryan Drogmund and Rozalyn Tyler each scored in the first half as Shelton burst out to a 4-0 lead at the break against their rivals.

Gill also credited first-year Shelton coach Carlos Hermenegildo and assistant Carlos Juarez for working hard to ensure the Climbers are at their best this season.

"I loved our other coaches, but oh my gosh, these ones. You can't get any better than Carlos and Carlos," Gill said. "They work hard with us."

Senior goalkeeper Taylin Vandyke earned the clean sheet in the net.
