Olympic park, forest under restrictions

The U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service issued a campfire restriction at Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest that began Aug. 10.

According to a news release, campfires are only allowed in metal rings at designated sites, campgrounds or picnic areas. That includes coastal areas of Olympic National Park. Gas or propane camp stoves can still be used in the wilderness backcountry and campgrounds, but should be operated away from flammable material.

Phase 1 fire restrictions are due to extremely dry conditions that are forecast to continue.

The restriction aligns with state and county campfire restrictions, commitments of firefighting resources battling wildfires in the state and nation and the strain any additional uncontrolled fires would place on resources.

The Northwest and nation are at preparedness level three. The public is urged to be aware of high fire danger and take precautions to avoid starting a fire. Fireworks are always prohibited. People should check for any new restrictions before going camping and if smoking, dispose of cigarette butts safely.
