New display showcases photographer, painter

Photography by Deborah Chava Singer and acrylic-on-canvas paintings by Heather Rosborough will be on display Aug. 30 through Nov. 30 in the Shelton Civic Center Rotating Art Gallery.

The Shelton City Council on Tuesday approved five photos by Singer and five paintings by Rosborough, which were recommended by the Shelton Arts Commission. Local artists are invited to submit works for the displays.

City moves to purchase new half-ton pickup truck

The Shelton City Council on Tuesday gave preliminary approval to buy a new half-ton pickup truck for parks and facilities maintenance operations for $34,000.

The council can make the move official with a vote at its meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 6.

The purchases would be funded through the Shelton Metropolitan Park District. The new truck would replace a 1996 F150 with over 99,500 miles on it.

City will help library replace fire alarms

The 33-year-old fire alarm panel at the Shelton Timberland Library died in mid-May, and repairs and replacement parts are no longer available.

On Tuesday, the Shelton City Council gave preliminary approval to take $45,000 in the 2022 budget that was earmarked for access control systems and use it instead to replace the alarm system at the library. Mark Ziegler, the city's community development director, on Tuesday said the city received one bid for the project at $33,340 from Guardian Services.

The council can make the move official at its meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 6.

The city received bids for the project on Aug. 15. The project calls for "the replacement of smoke alarms, heat detectors, pull stations and other required hardware for a modernized, fully functioning system."

The city report states that since the system went down in May, library staff have served as "fire watch," walking the building inside and out every 15 minutes. This has forced the library to reduce operating hours and services.
