Be aware during National Poison Prevention Week

More than 2 million poisonings are reported yearly to the nation’s poison control centers, which can be reached through the Poison Help line, 800-222-1222. Established in 1961, National Poison Prevention Week is observed during the third week of March every year and was established to focus national attention on the dangers of poisonings and how to prevent them.

According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, 93% of poisonings happen at home, with 45% involving children under the age of 6. Household cleaners and disinfectants are one of the leading causes of household poisonings. As you begin spring cleaning, you can keep your family safe by following a few tips.

Store household chemicals and cleaners in their original containers. Do not use food containers such as cups or bottles to store household cleaners and other strong chemicals. Mixing bleach with cleaners or other chemicals might produce chlorine gas, which can cause serious injury if inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Do not mix bleach with anything but water. Additionally, turn on fans and open windows when using strong chemicals — never sniff a container to see what’s inside. Discard old or outdated products and follow all product label instructions

carefully. Finally, keep cleaners and other poisonous chemicals out of reach of children.

Any substance can be poisonous if used in the wrong way. If you suspect a poisoning or if you have questions about poisons, call the Poison Help line at 800-222-1222.
