Shining during winter's cold

18 athletes chosen for Winter 2022 All-Mason County teams; Six earn MVP honors

The 2021-22 winter high school sports season looked much closer to normal after nearly two years of pandemic restrictions.

Many teams qualified for postseason play, as did several Mason County athletes who competed in the first state tournament action in two years.

Today, the Shelton-Mason County Journal honors athletes from winter 2022 sports, which included boys and girls basketball, boys and girls wrestling, boys swimming and bowling.

Eighteen Mason County athletes are being honored for their efforts and competitiveness on the courts, mats, lanes and pool. In addition, six athletes earned Most Valuable Player honors.

Among those are two-time girls basketball MVP Rachel Youngman and two-time boys swimming Athlete of the Year Sean Morson.

It also includes boys wrestling MVP Ryan Mackiewicz, who won his first eight postseason matches and advanced to the 170-pound semifinals at 2A Mat Classic.

The team is selected by Journal editor Justin Johnson and reporter Matt Baide based on regular season and postseason team finish, individual play, statistics and input from coaches in the county.
