Shelton senior Ryan Mackiewicz placed sixth at 170 pounds at the 2A Mat Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.

Mackiewicz earned two wins Friday to reach the semifinals. He defeated Burlington-Edison's Nathan Keith in a 13-4 major decision. He earned a sudden victory in the quarterfinals against Ellensburg's Breck Hammond.

Mackiewicz lost in the semifinals on Saturday in the final six seconds of the match to North Kitsap's Zakaria Hammou in a 6-3 decision. He lost to Othello's Ethan Perez-Medina in the consolation semifinals due to an injury 16 seconds into the match, which forced him to forfeit the fifth-place match against Clarkston's Jonah Mckamey to place sixth.

Mario Boxley competed in the 182-pound tournament and won his first match by pin against Sedro-Woolley's Owen Carpenter. Boxley fell to Selah's Gerald Schmidt in the quarterfinals by an 11-1 major decision. His tournament came to an end in the next match, falling to Othello's Alexis Espindola by a 16-4 major decision.

Shelton boys swim team wraps up season at state

The Shelton boys swim team competed in the 2A state swim meet Feb. 18 and 19 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Abram Ordonez, Sean Morson, Wyatt Anthis and Charlie Morson finished with a time of 1:52.80. The 200-yard freestyle relay of Ordonez, Charlie Morson, Sean Morson and Anthis finished the race in 1:40.24.

Charlie Morson competed in the 200-yard freestyle and finished with a time of 2:03.96. Sean Morson competed in the 200-yard individual medley and finished the race in 2:24.07 and raced in the 100-yard breaststroke and completed the race in 1:10.48. Abram Ordonez swam in the 100-yard butterfly and finished in 1:01.81.

Andrew Karr swam in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:57.82. Ordonez swam in the 100-yard backstroke and finished in 1:05.86.

"It was uncertain whether we would have more than a couple swims at state, and we were very pleased when we qualified seven races and had five competing," Shelton coach Chad Youngquist said in an email to the Journal. "Abram and Sean had the heaviest load with four swims each. Swimming that many races at or near their best is a testament to their toughness. The boys all performed near their best. Many of them had huge time drops the week before at districts, and we were pleased to see that they maintained these improvements by performing consistently at their best."

Youngquist said he was happy with how the boys and girls swim teams performed this season, especially with no club team in the area for swimmers to train at in the offseason.

"Many of them took advantage of the out-of-season conditioning that the WIAA allowed during the pandemic," Youngquist said. "If this had not been the case it would have been a much different result for both of them. Other teams have had their pools open for club swimming for quite a while. If we had not made this available before and after school, it would have been a real tragedy for our upper classmen."
