City surpluses seven properties

The Shelton City Council on Oct. 19 declared seven city properties surplus and make them available for purchase.

The council gave preliminary approval at its Oct. 5 meeting. The council is required to hold a public hearing on the surplus of any property originally acquired for pubic utility purposes.

No one spoke during the public hearing in the proposal.

The properties include four adjoining 0.21-acre lots of West Harvard Avenue, with estimated values between $32,380 and $33,035. Two other properties are on 13th Street near Mason General Hospital, one a 2.15-acre lot estimated to be worth $16,630 and a 5.17-acre lot north of the Maurice Apartments estimated at $99,125. The seventh property is half an acre at 224 N. Front St. estimated to be worth $57,250.

City staff will order an appraisal to determine the fair market value of the properties and market them for sale, said Public Works Director Jay Harris. The council can discuss the sale prices in closed executive session if it believes disclosure of the negotiation process would lead to the likelihood of a decreased price, according to the report to the council.
