Holiday magic

Regular attendees of Shelton's Holiday Magic Christmas Parade know there's a big chance they will be standing in freezing rain.

That was not the case Saturday on West Railroad Avenue in downtown Shelton. The skies were clear for the event hosted by Kristmas Town Kiwanis and Peninsula Credit Union.

"I've been joking with club members that I've never had my prayers answered by the weather gods," Kiwanis member Julie Rowan, co-chair of Holiday Magic, said with a laugh. "It was beautiful."

The parade showcased 59 entries, including four fire trucks and three marching bands.

"Railroad was absolutely jam-packed," Rowan said of the crowd. She thanked Peninsula Credit Union, the participating groups, Kiwanis members and coordinator Melissa Wood for making the event successful.

Mary M. Knight School District won the award for "Best of Parade." The other first-place winners were North Mason High School for bands, Mary M. Knight School District for marching, Sierra Pacific Industries for commercial, Equestriennes of Mason County for equestrian, South Sound Appliance for floats, Fire District 12 for fire trucks and 4-H in the motorized category.

Parade planners will take a breather and reconvene in September to plan next year's parade.
