Mayor earns leadership certification

Shelton Mayor Eric Onisko recently earned an Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership from the Association of Washington Cities.

The program recognizes city and town elected officials for accomplishing training in five core areas: roles, responsibilities and legal requirements; public sector resource management; community planning and development; effective local leadership; and diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

"Being a city leader in Washington is a complex job," AWC CEO Deanna Dawson said in a news release. "Through our Advanced CML program we are providing our elected officials with knowledge they need to effectively operate within the law, plan for the future, secure and manage funds, foster strong relationships, and work to build more equitable communities."

To earn the certificate, Onisko completed more than 60 hours of training and demonstrated local community service.

Onisko was elected to the Shelton City Council in 2018 and was elected mayor by his fellow council members in 2022. He is on several boards and committees, including the Mason County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee and the Mason Transit Authority Board.

"The Certificate of Municipal Leadership program is focused on learning more about all of the nuts and bolts of city leadership," Onisko said in the news release. "I enjoyed learning as much as I can so I can be an effective voice in our community."
