Evangelical musical this weekend at Shelton High

Shelton grads, residents featured in local play

Clearly Focused Productions stages the evangelical musical drama "Moment of Truth" at 7 p.m. Friday, 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Shelton High School Performing Arts Center, 3737 N. Shelton Springs Road.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children younger than 10, and church youth groups can get in for $5 each with a minimum group of 10. Information: http://www.ClearlyFP.com and 360-789-7917.

Laura Lee (Johnston) Roznowski directs a cast of about 30 in the show, which she co-wrote with Patrice Johnson about 23 years ago in New Jersey

The play is a homecoming for Roznowski, whose family has lived in Mason County for five generations. Her great grandparents, Gottfried and Sophia Peste, owned and farmed most of what is now Sanderson Field before World War II.

Roznowski started acting as a student at Shelton Junior High School, and landed lead roles in shows at Shelton High School, where she graduated in 1974.

Roznowski said she enrolled at the University of Washington with an eye on a career as an actress or TV talk show host. Instead, she married, had two daughters and moved to New Jersey. She owned a decorating store and turned to writing plays with Christian themes.

In 2000, "Moment of Truth" was staged for six performances at a theater in New Jersey. Roznowski and her writing partner edited the script, keeping half of Johnson's tunes and adding a dozen Christian hits by Cain, Toby Mac, Matthew West, Zach Wilson, Ann Wilson and others.

In the show, a Christian band is practicing for a concert to benefit Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-based 12-step program that encourages "the healing of hurts, habits and hang-ups," Roznowski said.

In the play, college freshman David loses his father to cancer and turns his back on God. He joins a Christian band to play music and hears the spiritual testimonies of band members. Tempted to join a secular band about to go places, he is visited by angels and demons. Biblical events come to life to help David in his decision.

Shelton resident Sean Meek plays David, and leads the band on keyboards. Tacoma resident Elizabeth Hennessey plays Kristy, the band soloist. The cast also features Vincent Anderson as Michael, Jalynn Hedlund is Jessica, Jodie Guedon is the demon of deceit and the assistant director, and Debi Simas is Lynda.
