Community events along Hood Canal in May, June

Hoodsport, Union and Belfair’s calendars are active with arts, entertainment and community events in the coming weeks, starting with the Hood Canal Improvement Club’s community market at the New Community Church of Union, at 951 E. Dalby Road in Union on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kerry Meyers, vice president of the Hood Canal Improvement Club, anticipates one to two dozen vendors, and hopes for clear skies, since that’s enough vendors to fill the church and start to spill outside, even before the event’s expected flea market is factored in.

Meyers said she believes the church might be providing some light food and refreshments, and said the proceeds from the market would be divided between the church and the Hood Canal Improvement Club.

North Mason High School Theatre will present “Grease” at 7 p.m. on May 18, 19 and 20 and June 1, 2 and 3, at the Toni M. Smith Auditorium, at 150 E. North Mason School Road in Belfair, with tickets priced at $10 for adults, and $5 for Associated Student Body members and people ages 12 years and younger.

Look for an expanded story on NMHS Theatre’s “Grease” in an upcoming issue of the Shelton-Mason County Journal.

Potlatch Brewing is also planning a release party June 30 for its custom beer in honor of the sixth-annual Hoodstock music and arts festival on Aug. 19-20.

Meanwhile, Rest-A-While RV Park and Resort at 27001 U.S. 101 in Hoodsport is kicking off its seasonal series of art and music fairs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays during the weekends of Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day.

The TNT trio band of lead vocalist and percussionist Theda Spracklin, guitarist Tom Quinlan and horn player “Cousin Vinnie” Anderson will return again to Rest-A-While from noon to 6 p.m. Saturdays, along with the open mic jams conducted those same weekends by the husband-and-wife songwriting and performing duo of Mick and Laura McCartney, aka Rhythm & Sass.

Arts and crafts vendors slated to appear at Rest-A-While are expected to pitch selections including photography, tie-dye clothing, jewelry, woodworking, windchimes, candles, stained glass, kitchenware and potted plants.

The Honeybee Café’s menu for the Rest-A-While fairs includes BLTs and Reubens, hamburgers and hot dogs, french fries, homemade potato salad and coleslaw, along with espresso, coffee, sodas and ice cream sandwiches.

As always, the Rest-A-While art and music fairs will also be collecting for the Hoodsport food bank.
