City homeless forum on Tuesday

The City of Shelton hosts a “Spotlight Shelton” community forum on homelessness from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Shelton Civic Center.

Some of the nonprofit groups that partner with the city will give presentations, and residents can share their thoughts.

The city’s homeless task forces’ last scheduled meeting is set for Oct. 11, before the community forum, where it will produce two short-term goals, two intermediate goals and two long-term goals. Those goals will be presented to the city council.

City gives OK to tourism grants

The Shelton City Council on Tuesday on gave preliminary approval to awarding $68,000 in tourism grants to local groups and nonprofits that attract tourists.

The council can make the grants official with a vote at its meeting on Oct. 18.

The grant money comes from lodging taxes collected from motels and hotels in the city. The city’s Lodging Tax Advisory Committee considers the grant applications and makes its recommendations to the council.

The committee recommended granting $9,000 to Kristmas Town Kiwanis for its Bluegrass from the Forest festival, $12,000 to the Mason County Forest Festival Association, $18,000 for the Mason County Society Museum’s visitor center, $2,000 for the Mason

County Historical Society’s Downtown Car Show, $13,000 to NW Event Organizers’ Christmas Town marketing and events, $3,000 to NW Event Organizers’ Outlook Park mural installation, $3,500 for PNW Raised Events’ Cinco Rocks and $3,500 for its School House Rocks, and $4,000 for the Shelton Downtown Merchants’ Shop Shelton First campaign.

Veterans village work will close North 13th Street

North 13th Street between Alpine Way and Holly Road will be closed between 6 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Oct. 10 through Oct. 21 during work on the Shelton Veterans Village, the City of Shelton announced.

Holly Road and Christmas Village will be accessible from the north. The Fir Lane parking lot will be accessible from the south.
