Salal permit sales Sept. 14-15

Permits for commercial-use salal in Olympic National Forest will go on sale Sept. 14 and 15 at the Quilcene, Quinault and Forks offices.

According to a news release, Quilcene and Quinault offices will sell permits Sept. 14 and the Forks office will sell permits Sept. 15. Sales begin at 9 a.m. and anyone harvesting salal within the Olympic National Forest for the purpose of selling must carry a commercial use permit while picking.

Fifty permits will be offered for $150 from the Quilcene office for harvest areas in Mason County, and the east side of Clallam and Jefferson counties.

Residential fire damage pegged at $20,000

Central Mason Fire and EMS crews responded to a house fire on Sycamore Court near Johns Creek on the evening of Sept. 2.

According to a CMFE news release, the fire caused minor damage to an older single-family residence. The lone occupant and a dog were able to escape without injury. The fire was reported at 10:27 p.m. in a back bedroom of the home. The damage is estimated at $20,000 and the fire is under investigation.

Candidate forum Sept. 20

A moderated candidate forum, sponsored by The League of Women Voters of Mason County, is set for noon to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Shelton Civic Center.

According to a news release, assessor candidates George Blush and Patti McLean, auditor candidates Steve Duenkel and Paddy McGuire and clerk candidates Sharon Moore-Fogo and Charles Rhodes will participate in the forum. The public is invited to listen to candidates describe their positions on issues important to Mason County residents.
