Volunteers team to clean Sweetwater Creek park

Members of the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group and TrashMash! Litter Posse on Aug. 25 hauled away debris and invasive plants from the future site of Sweetwater Creek Waterwheel Park, in the woods next to Belfair Elementary School.

The park, across state Route 3 from the Mary E. Theler Wetlands Nature Preserve Center, is designed to be sustainable, accessible and enhance public spaces and the ecosystem.

The work on the project includes removing trash and invasive species, restoring the waterwheel, building an Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible fishing dock, removing a fish barrier on the creek, building a natural playground, and creating walking trails and installing native plant species.

During the cleanup Aug. 25, volunteers removed more than 40 yards of trash and debris, including tires, glass and plastic from the site. The two groups plan three more cleanups. To volunteer, go to pnwsalmoncenter.org/get-involved/volunteer.

The Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group is an environmental nonprofit organization in Belfair. The group conducts salmon research, restoration and education throughout the Hood Canal watershed.

The TrashMash! Litter Posse was founded by the late Journal outdoor columnist Mark Woytowich. For the past two years, they have been meeting to clean up walking trails, forests and parks.
