Mason County needs volunteer fire chaplains

Are you looking to serve your community in a way that will truly make a difference?

The Mason County Fire Chiefs Association is seeking applications for its Volunteer Fire Chaplain Program. Fire chaplains meet emotional and spiritual needs in times of crisis. They provide comfort, reassurance and guidance to those in Mason County who are displaced by fire or experience a traumatic event. Additional duties include assisting with contacting family members or pastors as needed, as well as providing referrals to appropriate community agencies in Mason County.

Fire chaplains are on-call and only respond to scenes when dispatched. We ask that our volunteers are available for one 24-hour shift per week, although exceptions might be granted as needed. You might be required to travel throughout Mason County, although we will try to keep your service area close to your home.

If you are a naturally empathic, patient and caring helper, you have the skills needed by your community. If you have a strong desire to share hope and comfort with your Mason County neighbors, we want you to explore our Volunteer Fire Chaplain program. Come join us for an Information Night at 6 p.m. Sept. 15 at Fire Station 21 at 490 NE Old Belfair Highway.

As Mason County grows, so too does the demand for volunteer fire chaplains. In an effort to increase the number of local chaplains throughout the county, the Mason County Fire Chiefs Association hosts a Chaplain Academy, from Sept. 26 through Nov. 14 Mondays. Classes are 5:30 to 8 p.m. and will explore chaplaincy's theoretical and operational components, using the expertise of experienced chaplains.

If you have a strong spirituality and great love and concern for people, you may be an excellent candidate for the Mason County Fire Chiefs Association's Volunteer Chaplain Program. Applications will be accepted until Sept. 23. For information and an application packet, go to northmasonrfa.com.
