Free supplies at Back to School Festival

The Shelton School District invites families to the Back to School Festival from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 27 at Oakland Bay Junior High School, 3301 N. Shelton Springs Road.

Free supplies that will be given while supplies last include backpacks with items insider, a hot dog lunch and other resources. To receive a free haircut, contact your school liaison to set up an appointment.

During the hours of the festival, Mason Health offers vaccinations for students at 1701 N. 13th St. Register at 360-426-2653.

Olympic College scholarships available for fall

The Olympic College Foundation is awarding more than $190,000 in scholarships for the fall quarter.

Sept. 9 is the deadline to apply. Scholarships will be awarded in time for the beginning of fall quarter Sept. 19.

Several of the scholarships focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Other scholarships focus on the performing arts, communications and academic excellence.

Applicants are required to write brief essays about themselves and what matters most to them, their continuing education, and how they hope to use their OC education to benefit themselves, their family and their community. Additional brief essays might be required for individual scholarship applications.

‘The Goonies’ screened in Kneeland Park

The City of Shelton’s Parks and Recreation Department wraps up its Movies in the Park series by screening the 1985 comedy “The Goonies” Thursday evening at Kneeland Park, 100 Turner Ave.

Admission is free. The movie will begin at dusk, between 7:30 and 8 p.m. Mason Transit Authority offers shuttle service from the Shelton Civic Center starting at 6:45 p.m.

Food trucks will be at the park.

The family-friendly movie — filmed in Astoria, Oregon — follows a group of young misfits as they discover an ancient map and set out on an adventure to find a legendary pirate’s long-lost treasure. It stars Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen and Martha Plimpton.

Free Family Night at Faith Lutheran

Faith Lutheran Church hosts a free Family Night from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at 1212 Connection St. in Shelton.

People of all ages are welcome. The event includes dinner, live music and children’s activities.

TOPS meets Thursdays

Take Off Pounds Sensibly meets from 5:20 to 6:15 p.m. Thursdays at Mountain View Alliance Church, 314 E. J St., Shelton.

Golf tournament helps Humane Society programs

The Humane Society of Mason County hosts its second annual “Putting Fore Pets” fundraising golf tournament Saturday at LakeLand Village Golf Course in Allyn.

The check-in for the four-person scramble format begins at 8:30 a.m., with the shotgun start at 10 a.m.

The entry fee is $110 per person, and includes 18 holes of golf, cart and meal. Awards and raffle prizes immediately follow the tournament.
