Library workshop offers look into cyanotype

Anna Goraczko, an artist-in-residence with Hypatia-in-the-Woods, talks about cyanotypes and organizes a community cyanotype at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Shelton Timberland Library.

A cyanotype is a form of camera-less photography using light-sensitive paper. Cyanotypes are slow-reacting prints on special paper that are sensitive to a limited near-ultraviolet and blue light spectrum. Midday is the best time for this sort of printing, and is a safe process for people of all ages. The workshop is free.

People who wish to participate can bring favorite flowers, leaves or other found objects to include in the community artwork.

If the skies are overcast Saturday, the workshop will be postponed to 1 p.m. Monday. More information is available from Sean Lotz at the library.

Goraczko - who lives and works in North Miami Beach, Florida - will be working to expand a cyanotype project, using native plant materials and other objects from this area that will become part of installations.

"I use this technique much like printing to record important patterns, plants and found objects," she said in a news release.

Hypatia-in-the-Woods is a local, all-volunteer nonprofit that provides women with time and space to complete projects in a small cabin east of Shelton. The visiting women perform and conduct workshops for the public.
