Lacey resident wins top division at Shelton tourney

Pierce Parnell of Lacey won the advanced division at the Washington State Amateur Championships disc golf tournament at Shelton Springs disc golf course July 2-4.

Parnell finished at 11-under, one shot better than Noah Phillips in second place. Bryan Roush won the Amateur Masters 40+ division at 1-over, two shots better than second place Deane Phillips.

The Amateur Masters 50+ division was dominated by James Huestis, shooting 17-under for the three-round tournament. Jeffrey Arnold won the Amateur Masters 60+ division with a score of 21-over.

Cameron Kellogg won the intermediate division with a score of 6-under, winning by one shot over Jon MacKenzie, Morgan Hart and Maurice Morrison. Aaron Gallagher won the recreational division with a score of 7-under and Elias Little won the junior division with a score of 2-over.

"From what I heard, the course played really well. The weather wasn't too hot and the wind was kept to a minimum, which increased what we call "scoring conditions. There were a lot of positive comments that I saw online and everyone seemed to have a good time," Mason County Disc Golf Secretary Justin Holzgrove told the Journal in an email.

Shelton Springs is hosting the Washington State Senior Games for players 50 and older on July 23. The Shelton Showcase is Aug. 13 and 14, and is a more laid-back atmosphere with a catered lunch on Saturday. Holzgrove said, "Those who have been playing disc golf casually, but may be interested in trying their hand at a little more structure, may be interested in our randomly selected, best shot doubles, every Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm."
