Track stars shine at 62nd Shelton Invitational

Shelton's Alauna Carstens has the Shelton girls record in the mile race after her performance at the 62nd Shelton Invitational on Saturday at Highclimber Stadium.

Carstens won the mile in 5:08.92. The previous record was held by Rima Butler, set in 1993 at 5:12.98.

Carstens won the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:07.13. Ali Clifton finished fourth in the 3,200-meter race with a time of 11:46.48.

"Alauna had an amazing day. She came in determined to win and she pulled it off," Shelton coach Doug Sells wrote in an email to the Journal. "Alauna beat a 31-year-old school record in the mile set by Rima Butler back in 1993. This was a big day for Alauna and she earned every bit of it. Yes, she was very happy about it."

Shelton's Mario Boxley placed third in the discus with a throw of 134 feet, 5 inches, and eighth in the shot put with a distance of 44 feet, 5 inches. The Shelton 4x400 relay team of Gavin Nielsen-Ricker, Bradely Eleton, Nathan Gomez and Kaden Pearson took second with a time of 1:37.26. Jaydon Blackburn earned ninth in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:04.37.

North Mason's Averie DuPont finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.19 seconds and seventh in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 50.75 seconds. North Mason's Jackson Bergdahl finished 14th in the 1,600-meter race and the mile race. The 4x100 relay team of Trent Petersen, Dakota Filer, Avery Ballein and Alexander Rank took eighth with a time of 45.22 seconds.

"We were thrilled with how the Invite went on Saturday," Sells wrote. "This was the first big meet at the newly redone track and field. Everything just seemed to come together just right; weather, fans and happy athletes. Shelton athletes had a great day. Those who competed rose to the occasion and had a great day. Anytime we see red and black uniforms on the track at the Shelton Invite, we are happy."

Shelton is back in action Friday at the 56th Bob Shaner Invitational in Tumwater. North Mason is back on the track today and Saturday, hosting the Olympic League Championships in Belfair.
