Meet finalists tonight for Pioneer superintendent

The public is invited to meet the two finalists for the position of superintendent of the Pioneer School District from 5:45 to 6:45 tonight at the Pioneer Middle School.

Jeff Davis is the superintendent of the Onlaska School District. He has been a superintendent for 16 years, and a teacher, head football and track coach, athletic director and school principal.

Lisa Riggs is the superintendent of the Sweet Home School District in Oregon. She has also been a teacher, coach and assistant superintendent.

Two openings on Hood Canal school board

The Hood Canal School District is seeking to fill two open positions on its school board.

One position serves the entire school district, and the candidate can live anywhere inside its boundaries. The other candidate must live on the Skokomish reservation.

The board meets at 5:15 p.m. two Thursdays each month, with occasionally other events and conferences to attend. Applicants can send a cover letter and resume to Board Chair Edie Reclusado at [email protected].

Two Olympic College scholarships available

Two Mason County residents will receive the Betsy Hankin Memorial Scholarship, which will provide one year of tuitions and fees to Olympic College.

Students must be enrolled in at least six credits per quarter, have a minimum GPA of 2.5, and demonstrate financial need. Students who intend to remain in Mason County will receive preference.

Applicants must ask these essay questions: Do you intend to stay in Mason County after graduation? If so, how do you plan to use your education to make a positive contribution to the community?

May 15 is the deadline to apply, and the winners will be announced by May 31.

Scholarships available to Pioneer students

The Pioneer Kiwanis Club is offering scholarships to high school graduates and GED earners who live in, or have lived in, the Pioneer School District, and are continuing their education at college or a trade school.

Harstine theater group offers scholarship

The Harstine Island Theatre Club is offering a $500 scholarship.

Applications and guidelines are available at CHOICE, Cedar, Shelton, Mary M. Knight and North Mason high schools, and at Olympic College Shelton. Aug. 1 is the deadline to apply, and the winner will be notified by Aug. 15. Completed applications can be mailed to Scholarship Committee, Chair Dee Ann Meacham, 12 East Wilson Road, Shelton 98584 or emailed to [email protected].

Scholarships available to Harstine residents

The Harstine Island Women’s Club and the Judy and Charles Chase Memorial Endowment are offering scholarships to full-time residents of Harstine Island entering or continuing their post-high school education.

Applicants must have earned a diploma from an accredited high school or a GED. May 16 is the deadline to apply, and winners will be announced by May 31. The number and amount of the scholarships will be determined by the time the scholarship recipients are selected.
