In the past nine years, this chanticleer pear tree on West Railroad Avenue near the clock tower in downtown Shelton has grown from about 5 inches in diameter to 12, cracking the sidewalk and lifting the grate. "This is maybe one of the worst ones," Jay Harris, the city's public works director, said of 38 "problem" trees downtown.
