A single mother of four with little income is hoping you pluck her wish list off the Christmas Giving Tree at T's Café and Espresso in downtown Shelton and make her family's holiday brighter. Her requests and others hang in purple paper from the sparkling tree at the café at 118 S. Third St., one of several Mason County sites where donations are being accepted. This is the third year T's Café has hosted the Giving Tree donation drive. Mason County residents who are low-income, disabled or un...

Port of Hoodsport officials recently contacted the Shelton-Mason County Journal to sum up the work being done at the Hoodsport Trail Park and the Hoodsport Hills Disc Golf Course, both of which are closed to the public. Port Commissioner Lori Kincannon said the removal of diseased, dying and fallen hazardous trees at the Hoodsport parks started in mid-July, and upon assessment of those trees, workers discovered that poria-laminated root rot was widespread and that the Douglas fir bark beetle...

  • Holding the door, against better judgment

    Kirk Ericson|Nov 24, 2022

I opened the entrance door to a restaurant for a woman the other day, which sparked a frayed memory of a time that’s no more. From the early 1970s, when the women’s liberation movement took root, to the mid-1990s, it was possible to hear the following from a woman if a man opened a door for her: “Would you hold the door open if I was a man?” Sometimes the statement was punctuated with the phrase “you male chauvinist pig,” a saying that’s also become a relic. Not all women reacted that way, but...

  • Growing up at Simpson's Camp 3

    Jan Parker|Nov 24, 2022

This is the conclusion of Jim Howell's memoirs of growing up at Simpson's Camp 3 between 1934 and 1946. We were poor and so were most others. I got two pairs of shoes each year. Ninety-eight-cent tennis shoes for summer - they usually lasted for a month or so and then I went barefoot. When school started I got a new pair of sturdy shoes. For supper our main, and sometimes only course was cornmeal mush. Pork was our main meat staple, except when an old hen quit laying and then we had chicken and...

  • Stallone reigns in 'Tulsa King;' the Pepsi-Harrier fracas

    Kirk Boxleitner|Nov 24, 2022

Stallone triumphs on TV with “Tulsa King,” while Netflix takes us for a wild ride with “Pepsi, Where’s My Jet?” ‘Tulsa King’ One of the themes of the later years of Sylvester Stallone’s career has been his ongoing struggle to stay relevant in an ever-changing world, whose changes always seem to be turning away from the sorts of conditions that helped make him a success in the first place. In this sense, “Tulsa King” on Paramount+ seems ideally suited to the big man, casting him as a Mafioso wh...

  • Thankful for family, turkey and sports

    Matt Baide|Nov 24, 2022

One of my favorite holidays is today, one that always has similar moments every year, but are still special in their own distinct way. I’m sure many of you have stories of family coming over on Thanksgiving in the morning, everyone conversing and catching up, perhaps watching some football before everyone is called to the dinner table to partake in turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, rolls and whatever dish your family has decided is tradition to make every year. I’m sure there are a few fam...

In between, she combed her own hair out. Clothes are important to Mary also. I think she was a person who tried to look nice all the time. I hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. Let the holiday season begin! Friday, Nov. 19, 1948 Arose late and made pancakes for breakfast. Then cleaned house and got my...
