    Kirk Ericson|Aug 11, 2022

I was busy catching up on infection news the other day at infectioncontroltoday.com when I came across this tidbit: “More than half of all Americans are symptomatic of highly contagious, unsightly and often difficult to cure nail fungus and infections, and may potentially pass them along to others by sharing nail tools, according to a new survey on nail hygiene habits. “According to the Fungicure 2004 Nail Hygiene Survey of 830 Americans fielded by TNS/NFO Research Worldwide, more than 52% of...

Correction A story in the Aug. 11 issue incorrectly stated that Sandy Kaiser, a candidate to represent District 35 Position 2 in the state House of Representatives, lives in Olympia. She lives in north Thurston County, near the Mason/Thurston border. The Journal regrets the error. Jesus and votes Editor, the Journal, Why do political signs show up everywhere on public property, but not on private property? • BALD-FACED

    Alex Fethiere|Aug 11, 2022

I've had a banner year of pollinators. The mason bee nest is full and I'm seeing such a variety of wasps, bees and flies that I've stopped worrying about stings when I'm working in the garden. Of bees, only honeybees and bumblebees sting. Many have said it's hard to keep bees on Harstine Island, and bumbles are very reticent about stinging. Early this summer, a friend disturbed a ground nest of bumblebees while using a machine to dig up bamboo, and for all that, one of his three-man crew was...

  • 'Bullet Train,' 'Prey' make old formulas fresh

    Kirk Boxleitner|Aug 11, 2022

A common criticism of certain films is that they're "formulaic," which I dislike as a criticism, because it's imprecise. A formula, after all, is simply a set of descriptions and measurements of specific ingredients, illustrating how and when to combine them, in order to achieve the results you're looking for. In that sense, a formula is a rudimentary story, and while it's true certain stories can feel hindered, or perhaps even trapped, by their underlying formulas, it's a mark of a versatile...

Mary is getting back into her routine after their big trip to Alaska and Canada. We can tell that Mary and Sam are doing pretty good financially. She has help with the garden and the trips they take. I chuckled when this week she asks herself, “Where is our summer?” We were just asking that same question to each other a couple of weeks ago. Now we are putting on the air conditioner. Got to have the temperature just right. Friday, Aug. 6, 1948 A dark gloomy morning. I was afraid it would rai...
