  • Mary's Memoirs

    Clydene Hostetler|Aug 17, 2023

Mary and Blanche spend all of this week in Canada. Sunday, Aug. 7, 1949 We arose early after a hot restless night and got ready for church. Went down on the streetcar with a group from New Brunswick and Pennsylvania. Just before we got to the church, we saw Waggoners and Douglas of Wenatchee and were they surprised. Then after a few words we went into church where we saw our friends from the train, the Tomlinsons. There were over 1,800 people at the services which were splendid. Afterward we...

This is a very full week for Mary and Blanche. Sam drove them to Vancouver, British Columbia, to catch a train to Toronto. Sunday, July 31, 1949 Today was a busy day. Arose early and did the balance of the mangling and put away the clothes. Then started breakfast. At 10 the Kurths came so we ate a farm breakfast with ham, pancakes and eggs. Just sat and talked. In the afternoon the Oaklands, the Bledsoes (who fish on the Columbia River) and another couple. Then Billy Hyde came in to ask to use...

  • MARY'S MEMOIRS

    Clydene Hostetler|Aug 3, 2023

After last week's vacation fishing and camping, Mary and Sam had lots to do around the house. Mary's father's estate is settled among Mary and the boys. Sunday, July 24, 1949 We got up late and I cleaned up all the mess from camping. It was quite a big job and with all my other work was not done until 3 o'clock. A sunny day but so very windy we could not go outside much. Wrote in my diary and pasted some in my scrapbook so it's up to date. Planted the mountain ash and myrtle over by the chicken...

  • MARY'S MEMOIRS

    Clydene Hostetler|Jul 27, 2023

This week was really a fun week. Mary and Sam took their boat past Dewatto, camped for several days and went sole fishing. Sunday, July 17, 1949 Today we ate early, and I washed clothes so we could go on our trip Monday. Cleaned house and put in fresh flowers. They surely look nice. Sam went to Belfair to empty garbage and got sidetracked so was gone most of the day. A very warm day and a light breeze. Leonard, his wife and mother-in-law stopped by and saw the flowers and the house. We had a...

  • MARY'S MEMOIRS

    Clydene Hostetler|Jul 20, 2023

Mary and Babe Michael drove down to the beach for the day and had a wonderful time. Hottest day of the year was this week in 1949 and Mary said the swimming was so unreal. Raspberries are still being picked but I think they should be about done. Sunday, July 10, 1949 We arose late as it was so noisy it was impossible to sleep. Ate breakfast and looked over the park which was very lovely although we could see not much time or money has been spent on it. Drove around some of the lovely view proper...

This week raspberries are the main job. Picked them and made 27 pints of jam. Watering the lawn and gardens are becoming a regular task. The weather seems to be getting warmer. Just a regular week in Belfair. Sunday, July 3, 1949 We arose late and Sam slept real late so ate alone. Bill Hyde and Evelyn were down and borrowed the ladder as they are going to paint the house. I picked some raspberries, and we took a bowlful down to Fischler's and met all his family. Stayed just a minute as they...

  • MARY'S MEMOIRS

    Clydene Hostetler|Jul 6, 2023

Sounds like it was a bit on the cold side. Blackberries and raspberries are in season. Mary attends several chapter meetings. She mentions that a new pup is there. Sunday, June 26, 1949 Today we all slept late. Sam was out late, and Blanche and I were tired. Then we picked raspberries and a few flowers. I cleaned the house and put away my clothes. A dark day and not too warm. The new pup is here, and the cat has her scared to death already. Eddie and Hal Fischler were down and Sam showed Hal...

  • It was so cold Mary had to turn on the stove

    Clydene Hostetler|Jun 29, 2023

Mary enjoys the sun. She goes swimming and works in the garden. Watering is a biggy in the evenings. She attends a Grand Chapter in Seattle and has a great time. Sunday, June 19, 1949 Today was very warm in the a.m., but at 12:30 up came another of those dry winds. By 12:30 the washing was done, cabin and upstairs clean and a lot of watering done. Very clear out and so lovely. Made a date with the dentist for Tuesday. In the afternoon I watered all the corners that were dry and lay out in the...

Mary and Sam take a ride down to Union then to Hoodsport in the evening. Nice thing to do to cool off. Strawberries are in season big time. "Gue-duck" chowder and strawberry shortcake was the food for this week. Saturday, June 11, 1949 Today Glen Harris called Sam up and wanted him to go after gue-ducks, so they left about 9:30. I washed clothes and cleaned house good. Fixed all the vases with flowers and oh, are they lovely. Sam sprayed the raspberries and roses before he left for...

  • MARY'S MEMOIRS

    Clydene Hostetler|Jun 15, 2023

I get a kick reading all the names of Mary's friends and acquaintances. Names like Leona, Vina, Ruby, Florence, Ruth and so many others. Names now that are used for newborns are totally different. Mary loves the outdoors. She loves the water and loves to swim. She lies out in the sun when she has the chance and I bet she was tanned. Saturday, June 4, 1949 Arose early and went to practice. Lovey wanted to move some stuff out of the locker so told me to come in early. But when I came in her...

  • MARY'S MEMOIRS

    Clydene Hostetler|Jun 8, 2023

Mary and Cleora drive to Pullman to pick up the girls from college after their finals. Mary finished putting her wool clothes in the attic for the summer. My mother used moth balls to prevent moths from eating on our clothes. We had several winter/snow wool outfits that would become hand-me-downs to us younger kids. Saturday, May 28, 1949 Washed clothes and then sewed up curtains for the cabin. Dusted and was ready to leave at 1. Sam fixed the stove so it will work and mowed a part of the lawn....

  • Sam and Mary are busy bodies around the house

    Clydene Hostetler|Jun 1, 2023

The rhodies are in full bloom here in Longview. They are beautiful. The weather is very similar compared with 1949. When I am in Seattle and catching a ferry, it is not unusual that I eat at Acres of Clams too. I love eating outside. Looks like Mary and Sam have put in new flooring in the house. I can remember my mom scrubbing the floors on her hands and knees. Once a year she would refinish the hardwood floors and as kids we loved sliding around in our stocking feet. Hope everyone had a great...

  • Flowers are in full bloom in Mary's world

    Clydene Hostetler|May 25, 2023

I can guarantee that if you would have stopped by Mary and Sam's place, you would have to go for a stroll and look at their flowers. When I was a kid in the 1950s, my mom would always take visitors out in the yard to look at the flowers. Usually, she would cut a bouquet for them to take home. Saturday, May 14, 1949 This day we arose fairly early and found the sun out warm and bright. We cleaned house and the men rode over to Henderson Bay with Rudy Sundstrom and returned at 1:30 with 3...

  • Mary has low-energy day: 'I was not worth a cent'

    Clydene Hostetler|May 18, 2023

Tulips were coming up a bit late 74 years ago, just like today. I think Mary is a sun worshipper. What do you think? It is only May and I bet she has a head start on that tan of hers. Saturday, May 7, 1949 Today I got up early and washed all the clothes. Then scrubbed the cabin good and to Belfair. We saw Kreislers at Belfair and had a nice talk. Bought our groceries and went to the locker and home. Cleaned the house and then laid out in the sun. Oh, it is surely nice out! So warm. The crab...

  • Mary has a busy week with chapters, scrapbook

    Clydene Hostetler|May 4, 2023

I think Mary Theler was a social butterfly. What do you think? She loves being around people and visiting. I am giving Sam kudos for washing the clothes. He does it quite often. Driving into Gorst almost every day to get her hair combed is a bit eccentric, don't you think? Definitely shows signs of a privileged life. Good thing Sam was a good provider. Have you guessed Mary's favorite adjective? Saturday, April 23, 1949 Today I arose early and went after all the bread so was home by 11. Cleaned...

  • It was 'a big night for ... Sam Theler'

    Clydene Hostetler|Apr 27, 2023

The barometer points to rain. I remember as a kid we had a barometer with a thermostat. There was a third gauge, but I cannot remember what it was. You know as soon as I send this to the paper I will remember. Saturday, April 16, 1949 We ate fairly early, and I cleaned the cabin good. Sam ran the vacuum over rugs and chairs while I changed the bed and got it all done by one. Then Henry came so I made the potato salad for Easter, and we ate ham with it. Very good and we all enjoyed it. Henry...

  • Mary gets shook up under the hair dryer

    Clydene Hostetler|Apr 20, 2023

My mom would buy stationery. I have been looking for some but with no luck. As I am getting older, I feel writing letters is a nice way to communicate. Belfair had an earthquake on April 13, 1949. Mary was at the hairdresser's and was under the dryer when it hit. Bet that was a shocker for everyone. Saturday, April 9, 1949 Picked up Squires at 9:10 and he worked about 2 hours then said it was too hot on some new plants, so he went home. I wrapped some stuff for the bazaar and Blanche cleaned the...

  • Mary gets busy in the garden

    Clydene Hostetler|Apr 13, 2023

Mary is gearing up for her flowers on the property. Doesn’t sound like the weather was particularly great, but trying to break into the next season with more sun. Mary likes her sun and likes to be tanned. Saturday, April 2, 1949 Today the sun was out when I got up. Sam washed clothes and I cleaned house. At 1 o’clock, I had a permanent put in my hair at Gorst and did not get home until 4:30. Sam had dragged the road and oh! it did look so nice. Then he got supper while I got ready which was...

  • Mary and Sam have a busy time up north

    Clydene Hostetler|Mar 30, 2023

You get the idea that Mary is getting tired of the rain and cold? I know I am! March is always the time we are all getting fed up with winter in the Northwest. Saturday, March 19, 1949 Today it is raining again and very windy out. We ate about 9:30 a.m. and then drove up to Sedro-Woolley to see Henry and Laurice. Henry was still in bed but soon got up and was "raring" to eat. Sat there and talked until nearly 2 when we went back to Conway. They have refinished an old house and it looks very...

  • Mary gives up puppy to Carl Rhodes' boy

    Clydene Hostetler|Mar 23, 2023

Rain, rain and more rain this week. I think Mary and Sam might have given their dog to friends. If they did, I'm sure the waking them up in the morning to be fed was the deal breaker for the poor pup. I would like to write about hankies. We do not see many people carry hankies today. Often, I would get a birthday card from my grandmother in Iowa and inside would be a hanky and a couple of quarters taped inside. When my mother's only sibling passed away a few years ago, her children had a few...

  • Mary gets the chance to visit in Sam's absence

    Clydene Hostetler|Mar 16, 2023

Sounds like Mary is totally comfortable being alone with Sam out of town. She is quite social. Having her shoes repaired, ironing and mending clothes shows what life was like at the time. When I was a kid and we lived on a farm in Oregon, we butchered a cow and a pig each year. My folks rented a meat locker in Sandy, Oregon. I got to go once and see what it looked like. The containers that held the meat were big metal baskets with a number on them and a padlock that was my parents'. It was very...

  • Mary, new puppy have grown fond of each other

    Clydene Hostetler|Mar 9, 2023

Sam is still in California and Mary keeps herself busy. The weather is getting nicer and she works out in their yard picking up, raking and burning branches from winter storms. When she leaves her new pup is extremely happy upon her return. Mary speaks of her new pup several times this week. One day she was gone most of the day and into the evening and when she arrived home there was no pup. After exploring, she discovered him on the neighbor's porch. Poor little guy got lonely. Saturday, Feb....

  • Mary's week filled with stops around the Sound

    Clydene Hostetler|Feb 23, 2023

I think Mary's favorite adjective is lovely. What do you think? I wish Mary would have taken a picture of their new puppy. Busy week for Mary and Sam and the weather is still trying to be winter. Thursday, Feb. 10, 1949 Sam came home on the last ferry so came in late. Arose late and cleaned house. Then we went to Post Office. Had to try the hill twice before we got up. So icy! At 1:15 I drove to the beauty shop. Sam had to go up twice to make the hill again. After my hair was done, I drove to Eu...

  • Snowy roads make driving tough for Mary and Sam

    Clydene Hostetler|Feb 16, 2023

Mary is home from their trip and taking care of business and catching up on her socializing. The weather seems to be very similar to what we are having. Cold! I don’t go out unless I absolutely must. I like warmth. Friday, Feb. 4, 1949 Today I awoke early so got up. We left for Seattle at 8:45 a.m. and made it alright without chains. To Conductresses meeting and it was nice. Learned a lot, too. The decorations were hearts trimmed with lace. 23 were there. Bought material for Valentine addenda f...

  • Mary and Sam leave Southern California behind

    Clydene Hostetler|Feb 9, 2023

Mary and Sam finally get home from their long trip. Five inches of snow is on the ground. Can’t stop Mary from going to Chapter. While they were gone their dog had been hit up on the road and was killed. I bet it seems different and lonely for them. Friday, Jan. 28, 1949 We woke up before the alarm went off so soon were on our way. Ate at Tip’s on Wilshire at 8 a.m. and were at Rosemead to get Vina and Henry about 9. We left at 9:15. Stopped at Santa Monica for mail (there was none) then ano...
