WEEK IN REVIEW

December 4: Mason County’s 2009 preliminary budget is about $2 million in the red. During a public hearing on December 1, the Mason County commissioners discussed options and took comments on the budget. The county expects $28,400,572 in revenue, but also foresees $30,239,921 in expenditures in its Current Expense Fund. Employment in the construction industry statewide slipped again in October as unemployment in Mason County reached 7.9 percent. Less building revenue here means less revenue to Mason County, which charges a fee for the permitting process associated with construction. Counterfeiters have been working in Mason County passing phony $20 bills, according to the Mason County Sheriff’s Office. Since November 25, counterfeit $20 bills have turned up at several locations in Mason County, the City of Shelton and the Olympia-Thurston County area. Mountain View Elementary School is overcrowded, school district officials concede, but the situation is not caused by the dual-language program at Evergreen Elementary School. Last month, a teacher at Mountain View said the Evergreen program enriches a few but takes away from many. Attendance at Hood Canal School is falling significantly and Su-perintendent/ Principal Tom Churchill

wants to turn that around. Also, the tardiness rates at Hood Canal are extremely high. “This is a recipe for disaster for our students,” he said. A home along North Shore Road in the Belfair area was severely damaged and the attached garage was destroyed during an early morning fire last weekend. Two occupants were awake at the time of the incident and no injuries were reported. The deal is sealed but a number of people around Mason Lake and Grapeview are continuing to question the wisdom of blending together the Shelton Fire Department and Fire District 5. Shelton High School’s boys varsity basketball team lost its home opener, falling to visiting Yelm, 61-54.
