Church vandalism
A fourth separate incident of vandalism at the new Shelton Presbyterian Church under construction on Springs Road registers in disbelief last week as members check it out. Pictured are church treasurer Jim McElroy and elder Mary Penney. As in the three earlier break-ins, windows were broken and walls spray-painted with graffiti. There’s a $1,000 reward for anyone who can finger the culprits, says McElroy, adding that leads should be called in to the Mason County Sheriff’s Office.

WEEK IN REVIEW

September 4: A human skull found Tuesday in the Tahuya area sparked an extensive search for more remains there Wednesday. The skull was found on September 2 by a local mushroom picker and his son northeast of Collins Lake in close proximity to the Tahuya River. It wasn’t known Wednesday if the skull was that of George Ronald Fuller, a 50-year-old Belfair man who disappeared last December after flood waters washed out the bridge on the Belfair-Tahuya Road. A fourth incident of vandalism at the new Shelton Presbyterian Church under construction on Springs Road had members in disbelief as they checked it out. Windows were broken and walls spray-painted with graffiti. A $1,000 reward has been offered. Frustration over soaring Shelton property values came to the fore during a public meeting last Thursday night. Mason County Assessor Dixie Smith and Terry Bow, the department’s chief appraiser, met with about 40 residents in the Shelton Civic Center, many of whom were unhappy with their latest property revaluations. While property

values have gone up, levy rates are dropping, Smith said. Teachers at Mary M. Knight School in Matlock lead all schools in Mason County when it comes to having a master’s degree, according to the latest report card on public schools issued by Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson. The state reported 70 percent of the teachers at Mary M. Knight had a master’s degree. Two women who will be moving from Shelton have given the city a going-away present: a large parcel about one acre in size to be used for a new park. The gift came from Mary Anne Murray and partner Betty “B.J.” Beatty. The site is in the Angleside area and bordered by Harvard and Grant avenues and Eighth and Ninth streets.
